🏖️ SUMMER BREAK TIME 🏖️

We will NOT be .farmersmarket this weekend or next and the farm stand will NOT be stocked.

If you have a special order mid-week I’m happy to create something custom for you but we’ll be spending the next few weekends having fun with our families, like summer was meant to be spent.

I’ve been at this flower farm thing for almost 7 years now and every year I loathe working in July & August. If you’ve meet me, you know I have 2 shades: see through and lobster. I’m genetically predisposed to be farming in a rain soaked bog in Scotland, not 118° direct sun. 🦞 😅

I’ve long lamented with my farmer friends that “if I could just figure out how to farm in Spring and Fall, I might actually love this.” So I’m taking some time and steps towards figuring that out.

That doesn’t mean we are done for the season and that I’m just sitting around drinking margaritas the rest of the year. I’ll be putting every bit of effort I can into cleaning up the farm, flipping long neglected flowerbeds, and planting for an AMAZING fall filled with sunflowers, amaranths, zinnias, heirloom chrysanthemums and more!

I’ll open the stand here and there, if it’s not 120°, so keep an eye on stories to catch those dates. And we’ll be at the farmers market off and on but for the most part…Summer break is “ON” ✌️

It’s prom season 💃🕺 and we have lots of sweet little boutonnieres and corsages heading out the door this weekend.

Yes! We do that too! BUT…you gotta email me sooner than the day before 😅

Blooms that are made for wearing take a little extra time to prep to make sure they last through all that boogie-ing.

If ya got a teen with a dance coming up send me an email stat! [email protected]
I guarantee they will have the cutest and most unique flowers around when they are sporting locally grown blooms 🥰

Still looking for the perfect gift for your sweetie? We got you!
With options for weekly, bi-weekly and monthly deliveries you'll come away looking like the most thoughtful gift giver ever.

I mean what's not to love about a flower subscription, supporting a local business AND making sure your neighborhood farm survives to continue another season?

While we don't have flowers right now we will have heaps in just a few weeks. They will be SO much better than those boring grocery store flowers too!

06/02/2024

Remember last week when I told you the only reason the Red Rose is so popular is because we tried to regulate the massive amounts of c❄️ke coming into the US during the “War on Drugs” era?

Well part of the bigger problem is that pesticides, herbicide and other nasty toxins aren’t regulated in any capacity those South American countries. ☠️

You might think…”so what? It’s not like I’m eating them?”

But are you? How many times have you seen adorable celebration cakes decorated with a few blooms. What’s the harm? You’re not eating them right?

Multiple studies have shown that florists regularly in contact with imported flowers can absorb up to 100 different toxins through their hand to hand contact with the blooms. These are serious neurological chemicals that at best cause many florists to have skin reactions so bad they retire from the industry after just a few years. 😵‍💫

Do you really want to bring that into your home and stuff your face into it? To have your kids stuff their face into it?

If you learn one thing from following me 🙏 please 🙏 let it be that who and where you get your flowers from is just as important as your food!

If you’re wanting to skip the cocktail of poison this Valentine’s Day, ask your local farm about a subscription! We have them available now on the website for all price points. Monthly, weekly, bi-weekly options all available for our Sacramento area loves!

22/01/2024

Not that long ago, Americans got their flowers from neighborhood florists, who bought blooms grown on U.S. farms. Florists crafted bouquets and arrangements to order. They still do, of course, but you would be hard pressed to find local flower shop that puts the effort into supporting their local flower farm or American Grown flowers. These days, the bouquets that many Americans buy, typically at supermarkets, are grown, assembled and packaged overseas.

Now before you think I’m picking on florists, let me just stop you. 🖐️🛑 I’m not. They have businesses to run & families to feed. Half my farm’s income is from beautiful florists and designers buying wholesale from our farm for their stunning designs. 😘

So how did we go from a floral industry supporting billions of dollars in blooms being grown right here on American soil to less than 10 American rose farms over the span of 20 years?

C0cäinę ❄️

Yep, you read that right…booger sugar, nose candy, shneef, snooters, or insert whatever goofy name you use for it.

As part of the War on Drugs in the 1990s, the U.S. passed the Andean Trade Preference Act, allowing for tax-free flower imports from South America. U.S. legislators hoped to provide South American farmers with alternatives to growing coca that would ultimately be used to produce ❄️. To this day it is unclear if the ATPA significantly reduced drug traffic, but it did allow for less expensive imported flowers to enter the U.S. market with prices domestic growers couldn’t compete with, ultimately killing the American grown flower market.

American Shoppers are expected to spend nearly $2 billion on flowers this Valentine’s day, most of which will be roses, flown in from Columbia and Ecuador and then trucked around the United States.

So when you see me pushing dried flower bouquets and subscriptions for Valentine’s day, it’s in an effort to bring YOUR money back to the US floriculture industry. We can grow SO many beautiful flowers right here, support LOCAL farmers, AND have beautiful flowers!

17/01/2024

We are approaching the dreaded V-word day 😬 and while it’s still winter (the person who decided a flower gifting holiday should be smack dab in the middle of winter was smoking some good stuff, man) and we only have a few scant hellebores blooming we DO have Everlasting Bouquets available! If you are looking to surprise a special someone, consider getting a 4 week flower subscription and adding on an everlasting bouquet. That way you get a lovely dried bouquet now and fresh blooms when they start coming! All available now in the online shop!

Photos from Redhead Flowerbed's post 16/01/2024

The big V-day is quickly approaching I’m not sure who decided to turn St. Valentines day into a holiday centered around gifting flowers but they were obviously not concerned with going with the flow of nature OR they lived in the southern hemisphere.

Either way they really screwed us local small scale flower farmers.

But we’ve come up with a work around…flower subscriptions! These packages allow us to pre-sell you bouquets and then deliver them once our fields actually have blooms.

All good things are worth waiting for, right…?

We have multiple options for frequency and price. You can get flowers every week, every other week, or once a month!

28/12/2023

It’s the lull. The time we finally get to pause. Time not afforded to us during the rest of the year. Socially sanctioned time to rest…what a beautiful time.

Purchasing our flower subscription in winter may seem counterintuitive, but it comes with unique benefits. By investing during the off-season you are:

🌱Securing Your Share: our subscriptions often sell out quickly during the growing season. Purchasing in winter ensures you secure your share of our heirloom flowers.

🌱Supporting the Farm: Your winter investment provides crucial financial support to our farm during a time when operational costs continue, but we have no blooms to sell.

🌱Planning and Preparation: we use winter for planning, purchasing seeds, and preparing the soil. Your investment contributes to these essential activities, ensuring a successful and bountiful harvest later in the year.

🌱Building Community Connection: Participating in our flower subscription creates a connection between you and our farm. You become part of a community that values sustainable agriculture, supporting local farmers in their efforts to provide fresh, seasonal products.

In essence, buying a flower subscription from our farm in winter is an investment in both the our sustainability and your future access to gorgeous heirloom bouquets.
