Noticing feathers everywhere and a decrease or halt in egg production..? π€πͺΆπ₯π
Not to worry! π These are the two main signs that your flock is taking their yearly, and much needed (and deserved) vacation! π 𧳠π π
πͺΆ Molting is a very normal, natural and necessary process that our birds (18 months and older) go through every year where they lose old feathers, and re-grow new stronger ones to help keep them warm through the winter months.
π This process usually begins in early Fall and is triggered mainly by our shorter days this time of year and the process takes approximately 8-12 weeks.
π Even though young Pullets less than 18 months old will not molt, their initial egg production can be delayed if they reach maturity this time of year due to environmental factors such as the shorter days.
π₯π Speaking of egg production, Iβm sure youβve noticed a decrease in egg production (or possibly a complete halt), with your hens that are of age to molt and this is completely normal. The reason your hens stop laying during a molt is because all of the protein in their diet that typically went into egg production is now going towards feather re-growth. This is one of the many reasons that we do not suggest using supplemental lighting to try to keep your birds producing eggs during a molt. The molting process is actually a much needed, and well deserved break for your hens reproductive system.
πͺΆ There are two types of molts, a soft molt and a hard molt. A soft molt is where a bird loses a minimal amount of feathers vs. a hard molt where they lose a noticeable amount of feathers. One important thing to know about molting is that the process can be rather uncomfortable for the birds so handling them can cause them discomfort during this time and is not recommended.
So what can we do to help our birds during this process? π€·π»ββοΈππ
ππΌ Protein is essential for feather re-growth. So, by switching to a feed that offers a higher protein content, like 18% - 20% (average layer feed is 16%) can be very helpful to your birds! Also, offering protein-rich treats (in moderation) such as mealworms, black oil sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds or even scrambled eggs are great as well! Just bear in mind that too much protein, even during a molt, can have an adverse affects on your birds. So, you donβt want to over do it. But, a little boost can absolutely help them through their molt!
We hope this post was helpful and educational and if you have any further questions feel free to message us! πππΌ
ππ£ We will get back up and running closer to February/March when our birds βreturnβ from their yearly vacation as well! πππΌ
Stay tuned as we will post our 2024 launch date closer to the end of off-season. Thank you! π
Have a great day everyone, and happy molting season! ππͺΆππΌ

We're gonna talk about something that isn't talked about very often. Brooder Pneumonia. When chicks get sick or start dying the first thing we typically jump to is coccidiosis. We have now been schooled by the fungal spores Aspergillus fumigatus. This causes brooder pneumonia.
It's pretty much everywhere, but grows in more abundance in certain places. It's naturally occurring in soil as well.
This summer we lost more chicks than we ever had experienced. I try to remain transparent about these things because if someone reads this and can save some chicks or spare the heartache and frustration that we went through then that's a win in my book.
We kept losing chicks and couldn't figure out why. We treated with Endocox (for coccidiosis) and we treated with Tetracycline for any potential secondary bacterial infection and then we also treated with TriSulfa in case e coli was a part of it. Nothing worked. Nothing.
Finally, I took a chick that had passed to our poultry lab, an hour and a half away, for a necropsy. We needed answers. Within a few hours they called and told me they had Aspergillus fumigatus, better known as Brooder Pneumonia. Our chicks did not have the typical symptoms of brooder pneumonia. They were still eating and drinking and appeared to be breathing normally. The Dr at the poultry lab said their guts looked fantastic and healthy, but the lungs and air sac were filled with spores and mold growth.
How does this happen? Well, in our case, we live in a 113 year old home, in southern Georgia with super high humidity. Our chicks are brooded on our screened porch. The soil underneath the porch and the soil in the flowerbeds surrounding our porch as well as the woodwork is likely infested with Aspergillus fumigatus.
So, this is how we're fixing it. We immediately brought the chicks indoors until we could remedy the situation outdoors. Brooder pneumonia is not contagious from chick to chick. We sprayed Virkon S on every surface and in their brooder to kill bacteria, viruses and fungus. We let it dry and 24 hours later we soaked the porch, woodwork, and flowerbeds in a vinegar spray. Vinegar kills spores. Then, we installed a second fan to keep the air moving and made our vents along the brooders sides much bigger for better airflow. All of those things can help to mitigate the damage from Aspergillus fumigatus. It's worth noting that these spores are found in many environments and we all breathe them in every day. For, grown and healthy humans and chickens alike, this isn't typically cause for concern, however, for young chicks it can result in brooder pneumonia.
There is no cure for brooder pneumonia. Once they have it, they will die. It's awful and sad, but sometimes the worst threats to our chicks are the ones we can't see. We, mistakenly, believed we had a really tough strain of coccidiosis hit us this year. We were wrong. Now that we know, we can prevent any further casualties, but it was a tough and frustrating lesson to learn.
If you have chicks start dying and coccidiosis treatment isn't working or you're fairly certain they've been in an environment that shouldn't result in coccidiosis, then, please consider brooder pneumonia.
I post this stuff because it feels awful to lose chicks and not have an answer. You feel guilty and frustrated. Every single chicken breeder, chicken tender, chicken momma will lose chickens or chicks at some point, it's inevitable. However, if we learn as we go and share what we learned then we can, hopefully, help others not experience the same thing and realize they aren't the only one it happens to. We learn and we grow and do better.
We have the following for meet-up (all hand-raised) π€ππ
