Research at Macalester
While much of Macalester quiets down in the summer, research across disciplines stays firing on all cylinders.
Mac students and faculty at the Olin-Rice Science Center and Katherine Ordway Natural History Study Area spend the summer on projects like studying fossils brought back from dig sites or gathering data on Minnesota's plants and animals. Learn more about some of the ongoing research in this video! #HeyMac

Research at Macalester
It isn't a coincidence that so many Mac students get involved in research each year—it's by design.
Whether they get involved in an on-campus summer project with a faculty member, find a nearby opportunity in the Twin Cities, or receive financial support for an otherwise unpaid internship through the college's Summer Internship Grant program, Macalester's emphasis on research plays a central role in preparing students for life after college.

Mac Votes - Ruthann Godollei
Today is Election Day, and Mobilize Mac's staff, faculty, and students have set a goal to reach an 80% voting rate among eligible Macalester students. Polls in Minnesota are open until 8 p.m. and same-day voter registration is available at polling places. Hear from Ruthann Godollei, Macalester's Wallace Professor of Art, on why she believes in the importance of voting.
"Why do we vote? Because so many people struggled for so long and tried so hard to ensure their rights to be heard."
Climate and understanding our oceans
In a lab in Olin Rice, Professor Louisa Bradtmiller, a paleoclimatologist in Environmental Studies, and Bella Garrioch '23 look to sediment in the Southern Ocean to better understand how oceans store and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
"There is something like 40 times more carbon in the ocean than there is in the atmosphere," says Bradtmiller. "Knowing the conditions under which it's going to stay there or start to come out a little faster are really important."
