1 week after upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid ectropion repair! What is ectropion you ask?

Definition

Lower eyelid ectropion is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward, away from the eye, exposing the inner eyelid surface. This misalignment prevents the eyelid from properly protecting and lubricating the eye.

Causes

Ectropion can be caused by various factors, including:

Aging: As we age, the tissues and muscles supporting the lower eyelid can weaken and stretch, leading to ectropion.
Facial Paralysis: Conditions like Bell's palsy can weaken the muscles that control eyelid movement.
Trauma or Injury: Previous injuries, surgeries, or burns around the eye can damage the eyelid, causing it to turn outward.
Scarring: Scars from previous surgeries or injuries can pull the eyelid away from the eye.
Congenital Factors: Rarely, ectropion can be present at birth due to developmental anomalies.
Skin Conditions: Chronic skin conditions like dermatitis can cause the skin around the eye to contract and pull the eyelid away.
