Hi, I am an internal medicine physician specialized in Obesity Medicine. I obtained the degree of Doctor in Medicine in 2003 from Universidad Pedro Henriquez Ureña, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where I am originally from. Following medical school, I moved to New York City and completed Internal Medicine residency program at Lincoln Hospital, a really busy hospital in South Bronx, academically affiliated with Weill Cornell University Medical College. I had an intense but amazing learning experience and I share those memories with the most diverse group of residents from all over the world.
After those busy days in the Bronx I decided to move to Oregon and fell in love with this beautiful state, first establishing in La Grande, OR., where I practiced primary and hospitalist care for 6 years, then moved to the Salem-Keizer area and live here since. I have been blessed with a beautiful family, my husband, our 3 children and our dog Justice.
During my residency and first years of primary care practice I developed a special interest in the management of Type 2 Diabetes, my reasons being the high prevalence of the disease in this country and learning that I have a strong family history of this condition.
Over the years my interest switched from management to prevention when I started realizing that as primary care providers, we were extremely focused on the treatment of a disease that can be prevented and managed very differently by identifying and reducing some key risk factors, being Obesity one of them. But, how to manage Obesity then? as primary care I didn’t have the answers, which is why in many cases I was afraid to bring it up with my patients.
I started educating myself, first realizing that unhealthy weight is a disease and not as is widely seen, just a consequence of bad habits, laziness and lack of will power.
I also asked myself questions like; Why was so difficult for some people to lose weight and so easy to gain it?, Why seems easy for someone to eat “just” one bite of cake and for others so hard?; Why the same food or eating habits affects people in the same household differently?
Trying to find answers to all these questions and being someone that struggle with weight gain myself, are the main reasons I became certified in Obesity and started practicing medicine with a focus on Diabetes Prevention, Weight Management and Nutrition.
