A message from OHA Director Pat Allen:

When this pandemic began, one of the first messages we communicated to the public was an effort to address stigma and bias against the Asian community in Oregon. Clear back then, there were incidents of discrimination, and reports that businesses were losing customers over an unfounded belief they were in some way connected to the spread of the coronavirus.

This week’s shootings in Atlanta, while not yet definitively classified as a bias crime, remind us that bias, as well as broader anti-Asian/Pacific Islander bias and stereotyping, haven’t gone away. I want to acknowledge the pain and anger many of our Asian and Pacific Islander community members are feeling right now. A pandemic is hard enough, and brings enough challenges without events like this being added to the mix.

Here are some resources that you or someone you know may find helpful, not just now, but any time:

-Project Lotus. Destigmatizes mental health issues in Asian-American communities by tackling the model minority stereotype through culturally-relevant education for the community and the empowerment of voices. Project Lotus advances the movement for Asian-Americans to be able to discuss, care for and advocate for mental health freely, without shame or stigma. (theprojectlotus.org)

- Lines for Life: Racial Equity Support Line. Whether in small acts or violent ones, racial bias can have serious emotional impacts. Racism changes how we see the world around us. It’s stressful to worry about how people see us as different or dangerous. It’s exhausting to notice the ways that people treat us as less-than, day in and day out. It’s heartbreaking to turn on the news and learn about more violence against people who look like us. The Equity Line, 503-575-3764, is answered by BIPOC counselors, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

- Asian Health and Service Center. AHSC provides a safe and culturally sensitive place for Asians who seek mental health care. It’s a culturally competent and linguistically appropriate service that is offered in Cantonese, English, Korean, Mandarin and Vietnamese. All staff members of the mental health program are multilingual and multicultural professionals who have extensive experience in the field. AHSC accepts Oregon Health Plan. (ahscpdx.org)

Good news! We expect to open COVID-19 vaccines to the general population starting in June. OHA Director Patrick Allen made that announcement in a press conference today (youtu.be/JUg7ju5zAgw) with Governor Kate Brown and Public Health Director Rachael Banks.

Oregonians age 65 and older will be eligible to get vaccinated against COVID-19 March 1. The next groups of people become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine no later than March 29. We expect to have enough vaccines to immunize at least 75% of all seniors by March 29.
