Thoune Wood Works
I transitioned to being a woodworker with retirement after a 40 year public service and military career, and now have my own dedicated shop.
My experience with woodworking goes way back many years, and started with home improvement projects necessitated by many years of home relocation. I can now focus my energies toward crafting unique one of a kind custom made wood working projects that fit customer needs. Get in touch if you have something you need or want. My latest project is posted up!
The screech owl box has been completed! Fun project using locally harvested black locust lumber. Take a look!
It’s bluebird house replacement week! Built a total of 4 new ones out of black locust lumber sourced from the neighborhood. Black locust is dense, hard, very rot resistant, and hard on tools. Houses have floors with corner cuts for drainage and ventilation. Ventilation holes on each upper side and a fold forward front, with baby bird assistance kerfs on inside, for cleaning. PVC 3/4” roofs with shallow kerfs on three sides to facilitate water drainage. Have not used this material before. Stainless steel screws. Two coats of water based polycrylic but only on outside.
Quick hook rack project for the bedroom wall. We might have too many bathrobes. Cherry with red mahogany stain and three coats of General Finishes Enduro-VAR II Water Based Urethane Topcoat Satin.
Fun and challenging project. New skills developed and older ones tested!
A better view of one of two completed cherry nightstands. These were made from rough sawn cherry lumber harvested from trees right here in the neighborhood!
Mission Style Nightstands are done! Take a look.
Finally figured out how to get this more in depth video of the box uploaded! Its getting used by Amazon and USPS now! Yay!
A photo of the installed package delivery box. Now if I can get the delivery people to use it!
For all of you crocheters out there, who doesn’t need a granny square stretcher? This one is quite versatile in sizes that can be accommodated. Wooden dowels stored in the capped copper pipe mounted to one edge. A 2” thick leftover piece of vintage pine was the base of this one, but they don’t need to be this heavy. One can be yours for $65. PM if interested!
A bee hotel is a great addition to your flower bed or garden. These are designed to provide nesting tubes for pollinating bees that do not create hives. Many different bees and small wasps that pollinate your flowers and garden reproduce in the tubes. This one uses wooden blocks, bamboo and cardboard tubes. The wooden blocks are completely removable for cleaning and the cardboard and bamboo tubes can be replaced each nesting season. The hotel slides on and off the rear panel and the panel is designed to be mounted on a standard size landscape timber. A metal roof of aluminum soffit panels was created and mounted to further protect the roof! These $150 hotels are shippable. PM me if interested!
It’s summer, and definitely time for outdoor swings! Just finished pressure treated 4x4 A-frame for a wonderful neighbor. These are available locally built for $400-$500 this summer, depending on the size of your swing!
Hi, all. It has been awhile since my last post! Today’s posted project is a version of the previously posted tapered seat bench. This one is the same spalted maple frame with walnut wedges, but the bench top is flat instead of tapered. Multiple wood species were used to mimic the look of a wood floor. Walnut, spalted maple, cherry and black locust grooved with walnut splines. Danish Watco oil and two coats of wipe on polyurethane. Came out great!
Good day to all! Latest project completed today. A tapered seat bench! Frame is dado created mortise and tenon connected legs, rails and stretchers of spalted maple with walnut wedges in the ends for strength and visual appeal. Seats are black cherry tapered on the planer and finish stained toward walnut color. Linseed oil and three coats of a water based urethane. Challenged my joinery skills over the past 60 days!
Getting organized in the shop is a constant undertaking. As all good woodworkers know, one can never have enough clamps. A few days ago, a great deal on F clamps showed up at Lowes. $50 for 8 clamps, four 12” and four 6”, about $6 per clamp. And of course that leads to a need to store them! The photo in this post was custom crafted to hold the clamps by the handle instead of the bar. If you need/want one made, let me know!
A workbench like this could be made for you!
Folding Adirondack Table, from fully open to closed up! Made great Xmas gifts!
Folding laundry table in down position
This is the page profile image that I can give a bit more detail about. A cherry and walnut hidden hook coat rack. These are pretty easy to make!
Roosting Bird Box
