Let’s talk propagation! 🙂
The best time to take “softwood” cuttings is in June, July, and sometimes early August. Softwood refers to a growth stage of a deciduous woody plant that’s not the new, green growth at the end of a shoot, or the stiff woody growth at the base of the stem. The best way to know if a shoot has reached the softwood stage is to bend it. If it snaps, the shoot is ready to be taken as a cutting. If the shoot is very flexible and doesn’t snap, it’s too green. Finally, if it’s not flexible at all, it’s too old.
Make sure to water your plants well before taking cuttings. The cuttings need to be 6-8 inches long, and you should only cut when you’re ready to propagate. Avoid taking cuttings from old, aged, or declining shrubs/plants, and ensure that they are insect and disease free. The soft shoots are very tender, and extra care needs to be taken to keep them from drying out. The great news is that softwood cuttings usually root quickly so the work pays off!
You can use a small flower pot or a small flat tray if rooting a few cuttings at a time. Cover the cuttings with a bottomless milk jug to maintain high humidity, or place the container in a clear plastic bag of you don’t have a greenhouse. Come Fall, enjoy potting up your cuttings.
Recommended plants for propagation include most ornamental shrubs, conifers, vining plants, and herbs. Plants easily propagated by softwood cuttings are Azaleas, Blueberries, Flowering Cherries, Crapemyrtles, Dogwoods, Forsythia, Hydrangeas, and Roses.
Happy Propagating - Be sure to share with us what you choose to propagate 🙃

It’s an Easter Week Miracle…
We have yet another chick that hatched overnight and another working its way out!
True story here - Mama hen left the nest for various hours a day to tend to the other hatchlings. After two days in a row, I took the remaining eggs as an experiment and put them in the incubator. Well that was accidentally turned off for at least 24-36 hrs. I turned it back on in hopes it would work out still, and to our surprise IT IS!
We have 3 chicks hatched so far and now the 4th is hatching! 🤗🐣Stay tuned for the next chick photo
We had yet ANOTHER surprise hatch overnight! 🥰
We gathered whatever eggs were left after the second mama hen hatched a few herself. Put them in the incubator, and discovered that we’ve got a chick who hatched within the last 24 hours 🥰
How cool is this!!??
