Breathing is one of those biological reflexes that we take for granted — of course we're doing it right...right?!
Learning to take deep, cleansing breaths is an easy and instant way to inspire a few moments of quiet focus. Have your child rest her hands on her belly, eyes closed. Encourage her to breathe in deeply through her nose to the count of five, hold it for two seconds, and then count down as she exhales every drop of breath.

Not too long ago meditation was thought of as some sort of mysterious ritual conducted in spiritual retreats, rather than at the doctor’s office or psychology clinic.

But in fact meditation and mindfulness are psychological processes and science has discovered many practical benefits to their practice.

I have been teaching yoga to my child since she was a young toddler. At this time, yoga was fun, silly and exploratory. As she has aged, I have included more breathing practices in our yoga time together.

School — and all that comes with it, including homework, extracurriculars, testing, and more — can be stressful and overwhelming in the best of times. With kids heading back to the classroom amid a global pandemic and after a school year consisting of remote or hybrid learning for most, helping children manage their emotions and anxieties as they ease back into some semblance of a normal routine will be critical. Although both adults and children can benefit from practicing meditation at any time, now more than ever, being able to process feelings and destress will be paramount for our kids' mental health.
