One of the first things Zachary said to me when he woke up from his coma, before he understood how badly he was injured but knew he had come so close to losing his life…he told me he wasn’t afraid of his children not having their father because he knew they would be well loved and taken care of no matter what. I wanted to jump in and tell him I strongly disagreed but before I could he said what scared him the most is missing out on raising his children. I’ve always known my husband was a good man and a good father, but it was that moment that I really and deeply understood how much my husband loved us. So much so that amidst his own severe pain and discomfort, his greatest fear was missing out on the profoundly beautiful gift and experience it is to be a father. Good fathers find purpose in raising their children. Good fathers find joy in raising their children. Good fathers know that raising their children is the most important work that they will ever do.
