Join us in wishing a HAPPY 🎂 HAPPY 🎂 BIRTHDAY to the one and only Debby!
“Miss Debby at the front desk was incredibly sweet and helpful when I first contacted this office and made me feel warm and welcome when ever I interacted with her in office.” - Winter Zamora, Google Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Happy patients make us happy! Our incredible patient, Mr. M, is post-op from a single-level laminectomy/discectomy (MITR) using , a device that reduces reoperation for reherniation by 81%. Before surgery, Mr. M had lost mobility and found himself in the "darkest time of his life." Fate led this patient to Dr. Bruggeman, who was able to surgically intervene quickly. Mr. M woke up from surgery pain-free and returned to work the following week. Months later, he is still pain-free and regained the life he had lost before surgery.

“If I can't fly, I can't take care of my family.” -Mark Miller
A seasoned pilot with decades of experience, Mark Miller soared through the skies with the grace and precision of a master craftsman. Yet, behind the cockpit door sat a man whose life was about to take a very unexpected turn.
"I have had lower back issues since I was in my 20s," Mark admits. "But this particular time, it got worse. It didn't get better."
The pain, relentless and unyielding, soon became Mark's constant companion, robbing him of his mobility and threatening to extinguish the light that had always burned bright within him. "Literally felt like it was the end for me," he shares. "I felt like I was dying."
For a man who had spent his life defying gravity, the weight of his own body became an unbearable burden. "I couldn't stand up long enough to take a shower anymore," he recalls, his voice heavy with emotion. "The pain was a 10 out of ten."
Yet, during his darkest hour, a glimmer of hope emerged from Dr. Bruggeman and his team of skilled professionals. "I found massive hope when I found Dr. Bruggeman and his office's staff," Mark says, gratitude evident in every word.
The decision was made - surgery was necessary. And as Mark underwent the procedure, a sense of anticipation mingled with apprehension. "We need to get you in right away," the doctor urged. "Your sciatic nerve is dying, and we gotta save you."
The surgery was a success, but its impact went far beyond the operating room. "It was about a day, and I felt 100% better," Mark exclaimed. "Super emotional for me... I went from that to euphoria, to the happiest place, to the most hope I've ever had."
Today, as Mark looks back on his journey, he is grateful for the second chance he has been given. "Barricade absolutely gave me my life back," he declares, his eyes shining with determination.
For Mark Miller, the skies have never looked brighter, and as he prepares to once again take flight, he does so with a newfound appreciation for every moment of freedom and every breath of life.
"It's great to see Mark do really well outside of the four walls in my office," Dr. Bruggeman reflects. "And that is really what gives job satisfaction to surgeons every day."

Texas Spine Care Center’s orthopedic surgeon Adam Bruggeman, MD, testified on his own behalf before the U.S. House Energy & Commerce Committee Health Subcommittee on April 16, highlighting several concerns shared by the Texas Medical Association.
“The attack has exposed the vulnerability in our health care system and the disproportionate burden placed on physician practices by insurers, government payers, and third-party vendors,” he told lawmakers.

Practice Viability Consequences of Cyberattack Weighed by House Subcommittee The Feb. 21 cyberattack on Change Healthcare – and its consequences for physician practice viability, industry consolidation, and patient access to care – were the subject of the first of several anticipated congressional hearings on the topic. UnitedHealth Group – notably absent from the hear...
Today, Dr. Adam Bruggeman testified in Congress, on behalf of all physicians across the United States, discussing the most recent devastating cyber attack on Change Healthcare (a subsidiary of United Health Group). The cyber attack on February 21, 2024, brought our healthcare system to a standstill and left crippling effects on physicians, hospitals and pharmacies across the nation. And it is not over! There is no greater time than now for Congress to take action to secure a safer healthcare system for all! The entire hearing is linked below and we encourage you to watch. More to come throughout the week from this powerful testimony.

“I am honored to have been asked to testify in Congress on the Change Healthcare outage that started in February of this year and continues to devastate physician practices. On February 21 of this year, Change Healthcare, who provides the communication for billing from our practice to insurance companies and back from insurers to physicians, was hacked and shut down their services. To date, they are still not fully operational. Hospitals, pharmacies, and physician practices that were impacted were unable to bill insurance (and are still limited today) completely disrupting their cash flow. The estimate cost to the healthcare system is estimated at $1 Billion daily and counting.
Many practices across the nation only have a few weeks of cash on hand and are unable to weather this storm. Many are having to forego payroll, take out loans, sell their practices, or even in some cases close their practice altogether. It is important that Congress hears about the struggles that this has caused and the impact of decades of policy that have hurt many physician practices. I will be testifying at 10 AM Eastern time on Tuesday morning in Washington DC. The testimony will likely be 3-4 hours, so we will circulate the links after the testimony has completed.” -Dr Adam Bruggeman, Texas Spine Care Center and Advocacy Council Chair for The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)
US health department opens probe into UnitedHealth hack The U.S. government on Wednesday said it has opened an investigation into the cyberattack at UnitedHealth Group's Change Healthcare to find out whether there was a breach of protected health data and if the company followed U.S. health privacy law.
Dr. Bruggeman is excited to use a new implanted device called Barricaid to prevent reherniation after discectomy. Over 30% of lumbar discectomy patients are at high risk for reherniation.
Dr. Adam Bruggeman performed his 25th Barricaid case last week!

“We appreciate that our calls to Congress did not go completely unanswered, but the small relief provided by a less than 2% adjustment of this year’s cut to Medicare physician services hardly classifies as a solution," Adam Bruggeman, MD, chair of the AAOS Advocacy Council, said in the statement. "Even the misinformation about this minor pay cut update being a 'bonus' is alarming and illustrates the lack of understanding around the bigger problem that is Medicare’s broken payment system. Until lawmakers address the underlying issue and implement long-term reforms, our patients in particular — who make up a large percentage of Medicare beneficiaries — will have a harder time accessing timely, quality care. AAOS will continue pressing Congress to protect patients with a permanent fix."
1.7% CMS pay cut 'hardly classifies as a solution': AAOS The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons urged Congress to implement a permanent fix to Medicare's physician fee cut, according to a March 9 statement.

WHAT IS CERVICAL DISC REPLACEMENT?
Persistent neck pain, sometimes even radiating down to arm pain, can be the result of disrupted cervical discs. Cervical discs are the cushions between the neck bones of the spine, which can be damaged through traumatic injury or age-related degeneration.
Cervical disc replacement is one of the surgical options to safely and effectively alleviate neck pain by removing the damaged disc and replacing it with an artificial disc. Artificial discs attach to the upper and lower vertebrae, and the mechanisms within the artificial disc mimic the natural motion allowed by a healthy disc.
