Bihar's Buxar district witnessed a spicy legal battle as a restaurant serving delicious south Indian cuisine found itself in hot water for a seemingly minor oversight - the absence of Sambar with its 'Special Masala Dosa.' The restaurant, which has become the center of attention, was slapped with a fine of Rs. 3,500 by the consumer court due to the omission of this quintessential accompaniment to the sumptuous dosa priced at Rs. 140.

The incident dates back to August 15, 2022, when Manish Gupta, a lawyer celebrating his birthday, decided to indulge in the renowned 'Special Masala Dosa' from Namak restaurant. With high hopes, he eagerly placed his takeaway order worth Rs 140. However, upon reaching home, Gupta's excitement turned into disappointment when he discovered the absence of Sambar alongside his beloved dosa. Determined to rectify the situation, Gupta swiftly returned to the restaurant to inquire about the missing Sambar, only to be met with a dismissive response from the owner, who brazenly taunted him asking, “Do you want to buy the whole restaurant for Rs 140?"

Fueled by indignation, Gupta took legal action, serving a formal notice to the restaurant. Despite no response from the restaurant, he persisted and filed a complaint with the District Consumer Commission. After an arduous 11-month battle, the Division Bench of Consumer Commission, chaired by Ved Prakash Singh and member Varun Kumar, acknowledged the petitioner's "mental, physical, and economic" suffering resulting from the denial of Sambar.

Consequently, the restaurant was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 3,500, with Rs. 1,500 allocated as litigation costs and Rs. 2,000 as the basic fine. The restaurant has been granted a 45-day deadline to settle the fine, failing which an 8% interest will be added to the amount.
