Runtime: 90 minutes
Showtime: Sun, Jul 14th, 7:00 PM
Location: Little Carver Civic Center

After many years of life scarred by PTSD, 5 men and 2 women veterans of the wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, travel to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon to participate in shamanic ceremonies and heal their traumas. For them, PTSD has become an invisible wound that traditional medicine has not been able to heal. Frustrated with a society that does not understand them, and unable to find answers with conventional treatment methods, they decide to embark on a journey of transformation that will change their lives forever. In a last act of faith, these veterans decide to travel to the Amazon jungle in search of a much-needed cure. They must relive their own stories and fight their own demons. The jungle will become the battlefield; a group of shamans will become their allies; ancient ceremonies will become the weapons.

Director: Severo Perez
Runtime: 99 minutes

The film is an adaptation of the prize-winning novel … y no se lo trago la tierra by Tomas Rivera. Set in 1952, seen through the eyes of Marcos, a twelve-year-old boy, the story follows a family’s migrant journey through a year in their lives. Marcos is the second son of a migrant farm worker family; his brother is missing in action in the Korean war. The family travels to Minnesota, following the crops. The housing is awful, TB goes untreated, water and shelter are not a given. For a few terrible weeks, Marcos’ parents leave him in the care of a couple who turn out not what they appear to be. He finds solace in a graveyard where his recollections of the poignant, sometimes funny and terrifying experiences become a magical voyage of self-discovery.

God Save Texas – La Frontera 07/06/2024

Countdown to CineFestival, we’re just one week away!

God Save Texas – La Frontera
Director: Iliana Sosa
Runtime: 56 minutes
Showtime: Fri, Jul 12th, 7:30 PM
Location: Little Carver Civic Center

In her poetic exploration of El Paso, Texas, Mexican American filmmaker Iliana Sosa unveils a city woven with vibrant Mexican heritage, its essence textured by the coexistence and division along the border shared with Juárez, Mexico.

Festival passes are on sale for $45!

https://45cinefestival.eventive.org/films/god-save-texas-la-frontera-6666027172362b005e64df58

As Sosa traces the fluctuating nature of America’s relationship to migrants from south of the border, she invokes the concept of Nepantla, a Nahuatl word for a state of “in-between-ness”, suggesting a frontier land with blurred edges where first-generation immigrant children straddle two cultures, navigating a complex sense of identity and belonging.

Where once immigrants were brought in as legal guest workers, now border policies and Covid regulations restrict the flow of traffic, impacting the lives of many families who live on opposite sides of the divide; recent gentrification further risks obliterating historic Mexican neighborhoods and lifestyles. In GOD SAVE TEXAS: LA FRONTERA, Sosa posits that a shared culture and a fluidity between the countries has always enriched El Paso, giving rise to a humanity and unique hybridity that allowed the city to come together and heal in the wake of the 2019 Walmart tragedy.

God Save Texas – La Frontera Mexican-American filmmaker Iliana Sosa explores how Nepantla, a Nahuatl word for the concept of “in- between-ness”, characterizes her relationship to both her Mexican heritage and her hometown of El Paso, Texas, and how that unique hybridity allowed the city to come together and heal in the wake...
