SCMF recently hosted a nature trip that introduced many first time visitors to the Forest. The group experienced a fun day filled with nature activities led by Corpsmembers Educators including nature walks, a scavenger hunt, forest games and lunch. One of the coolest experiences of being a Fire Lookout Volunteer is when a Cal Fire Air Tanker acknowledges the Fire Lookout Towers with a flyby. This is Air Tanker 73 based at the Hemet Ryan Air Attack Base, doing a flyby of Morton Peak Fire Lookout last week.

The Southern California Mountains Foundation’s OHV, staff and crew recently participated in the Forest Service Front County community’s third annual Spring Clean Jamboree. Everyone was out with smiles to support and clean up public lands. Despite the rain with groups like ( SCOR+ ) SoCal Off-Road & Recovery Main Page FREE, SBNF Adopt-A-Trail Volunteers and many others. The Southern California Mountains Foundation’s OHV staff and crew began trail maintenance on the Baldy Mesa motorized trails. Recent storms have hit these trails hard with erosion and they are due for some maintenance with grant funding from the California State Parks, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division through the Recreational Trails Program. The Big Bear Valley is home to some of the most rare wildflower blooms in the world. Blooms most call, ‘belly plants’, are a unique variety of wildflowers so small, you need to lay down on your belly to see them. Varieties of these belly plants are only found in the Pebble Plains. April 6th the Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve will be open and ready to explore with a trained naturalist. Stay tuned for weekly adventures out into these precious plains. The Big Bear area is the only area in the world that is home to Pebble Plains ecosystems. The Southern California Mountains Foundation and other wonderful organizations are working hard to sustain and protect these areas with the Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve and the Pebble Plain Ecological Reserve in Moonridge. Winter is filled with fun activities and we all want to get a chance to see the beautiful snow while it lasts. Visiting the National Forest is truly a privilege and public lands like these remain open for everyone to enjoy due to the hardworking volunteers and individuals who give their time to picking up and restoring the local area. While you visit we encourage everyone to be mindful of the environment, other visitors, wildlife habitats and nature all around. Each fall the Southern California Mountains Foundation’s Urban Conservation Corps packs up their gear to head out into the backcountry, with a mission for conservation in Palm Canyon, an area in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. Corpsmembers work alongside volunteer mule pack teams and the U.S. Forest Service to remove invasive Tamarisk and work to restore flowing streams and washes in this important watershed so they can provide additional water sources and native habitat for Peninsular Bighorn Sheet, riparian birds and other wildlife. This project is an incredible opportunity for UCC Corpsmembers, offering so many experiences for personal growth and group connectedness. Just last week, The Southern California Mountains Foundation joined forces with GATX a volunteer group that reached out for a community service project. The group picked up over 5000lbs of trash! Believe it or not, this is just a small example of what groups like this can do. Just in 2023 alone, SCMF's OHV volunteers hauled over 18,000lbs of trash from the forest, installed 730 feet of fencing to protect sensitive habitats, and repaired 225 route hazards. 👏This is just the tip of the iceburg!
