On February 26th we lost a great LiUNA leader. This loss has been felt across our entire membership and community at large. Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to the Macedo family during this tough time.

Today, let us re-dedicate ourselves to the cause of labor rights, human rights, and social and economic justice and through our strength and resolve, we will lift up the working-class in both of our great nations.

Our top consideration for the Sports Arena redevelopment is housing. The Midway Rising project proposes the highest number of new homes — 4,250 — with more than half either affordable or middle-income. This means housing for working families, seniors, veterans, young people, and more.

We are proud to support MidwayRising in partnering up with the City to build a new world-class arena and thousands of housing units. This project will be built by skilled and trained members of Laborers Local 89 ✅💪🏽

I am recommending Midway Rising as the project to redevelop the Sports Arena property. After a transparent process in accordance with state law, I’m confident this project will deliver thousands of new affordable homes, a new world-class arena, and more. This is consistent with my vision for the property as well as the priorities I've heard from San Diegans.

Yesterday, I toured The Laborers Training School serving LIUNA LIUNA Local 89 in Lakeside. This facility offers over 700 classes from blue print reading to wielding and everything in between.

Proper training and site safety go hand in hand, and they take this responsibility very seriously. Thank you for allowing me to tour your facility and see how some of your members prepare for their chosen specialty.
