Gloria and Manny met their CASA, José, who observed that they struggled to speak English well. The next time he met with them, CASA José introduced himself in their native language. This simple introduction allowed Gloria and Manny to truly speak to CASA José about their feelings and experiences, and their entire dynamic changed. Now CASA José spends time with Gloria and Manny playing soccer, practicing their English, and even learning to ride bikes. As their CASA, José advocated in court for the children to receive English language learning services and tutoring. This May, as we recognized National Foster Care Month and observed Mental Health Awareness Month, our Real Word Panel explored the mental health challenges youth living in foster care faced and how Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) supported their mental health throughout their foster care journey. Tune in to listen to Anthony, Josh, and Vanessa candidly share their experiences around their sense of individuality, lack of confidence in themselves, and unbuilding habits that were formed while in foster care and their challenges with processing their anger, depression, and low self-esteem.
