Eric Sanders is no stranger to the concept of ‘return on investment,’ having spent more than 30 years as a successful entrepreneur in the manufacturing industry. Still, when the California-based businessman started shifting his focus toward philanthropy, he never imagined it would also help him recover a long-lost passion. The Sanders Family Philanthropic Foundation has supported Global Communities for many years, partnering with communities in the United States and around the world as they work to build healthy, resilient lives. Last fall, we received a grant from the San Diego Foundation to ensure families are able to access the 2021 Child Tax Credit (CTC). The CTC reduced child poverty by roughly 30%!
We saw that families who most need the Child Tax Credit were not receiving it, either because their incomes are too low to meet the tax filing requirement, or because parents do not taxpayer ID (ITIN) numbers. We collaborated with local partner MAAC to host an ITIN application support event, resulting in families receiving more than $116,000 in tax credits that they would not otherwise get. In addition to being able to use these funds for essential family needs, these families are now able to formally engage in banking to safeguard their money and to find legitimate sources of work while their immigration paperwork is processed.
Thank you San Diego Foundation and MAAC for your partnership to make this happen!
‼️‼️‼️
Before 2021, low income families received a limited portion of the Child Tax Credit as a tax refund since benefits were concentrated among middle income families. Since the credit became fully available in 2021, thousands of low-income families have been able to receive the same benefits as those received by middle-income families and it's had astounding impact, keeping 3 million children out of poverty, reducing food insecurity and improving overall health. If you have not claimed your Child Tax Credit yet, you can still claim it at getctc.org/en

At least 2 million Americans still don’t have running water or a working toilet at home, costing the US economy $8.58 billion each year. While most Americans take this basic infrastructure for granted, daily life looks very different for the families who live inside the water access gap.
Today, DigDeep—a human rights non-profit working to ensure that every American has clean, running water—released "Draining: The Economic Impact of America's Hidden Water Crisis." In this report, the organization analyzed a wide variety of public health and economic data to calculate the price tag of life without a toilet or tap. The findings are striking. We can close America's water access gap in our lifetimes. As this report shows, we can't afford not to. Read the report and learn how you can help close the : https://bit.ly/3A6BsOB

Today on , we recognize the resilience and strength of many around the world and honor every individual’s right to seek safety. Refugees are among the most vulnerable to human trafficking and Global Communities remains committed to leveraging partnerships that work towards ending human trafficking in the United States.
We recently welcomed the Somali Bantu Association of America (SBAOA) to our offices in San Diego and continue to work closely with them on our trafficking prevention program. The SBAOA helps refugees in the local community through their support programming, language services and education, and employment resources.
