ARTEFFECT Unsung Heroes Ambassador Program 05/14/2024

This year, I was a member of the inaugural cohort of ARTEFFECT Ambassadors. The program is part of the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes and is described as "an online fellowship for educators working directly with K-12 students to foster the visual arts. Educators learn from and alongside other high-level practitioners through art-focused, project-based learning about the Unsung Heroes. During the 2024-2025 school year, Ambassadors will participate in online modules and complete a capstone project to make an impact on their schools and communities." For me, the program was an incredible opportunity to learn and grow as an educator while creating a dynamic program for my students....

We learned about Vikings today. We learned that Vikings only bathed once a week. 😳 They made their clothes out of plants, leather, and wool. We learned that they discovered the US first and they traveled by ship and used ravens to help with navigation. What I love about these is how different they are. Some students chose to paint a Viking ship or many ships or a Viking. One set of Vikings is looking out the mouth of a cave that has big giant sharp points at the entrance. I love their creativity...,

The lively first graders did a pretty great job of getting all the paint supplies to the sink. They LOVE washing the tables down at the end of the day often moving on to cleaning table legs and chairs 🥰
I know in a couple of years there will be a student or two who will want to wash, stack and organize everything. And I will let them because they will have moved on from “the sink is a never ending water table” stage IYKYK 😉...

The conversation I had with these two friends who were playing with these four characters was absolutely priceless. They talked about how they were saving different recyclables to create a place for their characters (You know Ms N like a Barbie Dreamhouse) They talked about how all the joints moved and you could pose them in different ways. What I loved most is how creative they were with just their lunch boxes, some action heroes and a juice cup. The plastic cup was a hot tub. The house was the lunch box. In the other lunch box was a basketball hoop. Imagine if life could always be viewed with that creative lens of a child. ...

I just love all their creative boxes of chocolates. We talked about how chocolate was made and that all of the decorations on top of a chocolate tell you what’s inside. Every company has their own designs. The kids got super creative with the colors and the swirls. 😎 It was really fun to hear what all their flavors were. 😁 When I was on my way to the teacher lunchroom, a group of kids invited me to sit with them at lunch-I can never say no to that! 😁 We have some of the sweetest most thoughtful students. 🥰...

PROUD Art Teacher moment! I learned today that this beautiful piece by one of our 4th graders will be featured on the back of the monthly planner. So much good stuff! Thank you for all you do! ❤️ I have to say that while I appreciated the vendor workshops, the presentations from our very own San Diego county school districts are 🔥🔥🔥 The student panel at the end of the day was incredible. I learned so much from those young adults! It was great to catch up with and chat about all things VAPA. A huge bonus for me was seeing a former student who was presenting today with her high school! 🥰 She said I’m the reason she learned her primary colors (swoon) and has any art skills (I doubt that) she still remembered our art room call and response: Red, Yellow, Blue… (do you know what the response is?)
My art teacher 💜 is so happy. ...
