The Rescued Dog
The Rescued Dog is a 501(c)3, all breed dog rescue based in San Diego, California, dedicated to finding forever homes for dogs in high kill shelters.
The founders of The Rescued Dog forged our bond during our volunteer work together at a local dog rescue. We recognized in each other a mutual respect for our human friends and the dogs we were helping to rescue. When the time came to start our own rescue, our collective mission was clear: save at-risk dogs from high-kill shelters and place them in loving, forever homes for the benefit of the dogs
Happy National Dog Day from our adoptable pups!

We rescued her with her brother on New Year’s Day, they had been at the shelter for 10 days and she was coughing. We got them to the vet and on antibiotics right away. The first few days Gretel had a decent appetite but Hansel wasn’t eating and seemed to be the sicker of the puppies. They were both sleeping more than puppies should and while Hansel turned the corner Gretel got worse. Over the weekend she stopped eating so we took her into the vet on Monday where she was hospitalized with pneumonia and gastroenteritis. She was on IV antibiotics and cerenia, and getting nebulizer treatments every 4 hours. It just wasn’t enough though and sweet Gretel passed away on Wednesday.
We are heartbroken and so sorry we couldn’t give her the life she deserved. Hug your pups today 💛
Gretel and her brother Hansel were rescued last week from a crowded shelter in Bakersfield.
Gretel is currently hospitalized with pneumonia and gastroenteritis. Please send some healing vibes her way.
We are in need of donations for her care. You can donate via Venmo or at the link below:

If you are looking for a great adventure buddy and are ready for lots of training fun, Alpo might be your guy! You can fill out an adoption application and schedule a meet and greet.

Friends!!!! We need your help! 🙏Mamas needs to find her forever home! She’s feeling super insecure hearing about all these fluffy puppies around town getting adopted and no one seems to be appreciating her uniqueness! Those expressive soulful eyes are waiting to gaze into yours with love and adoration. This girl will *bond* with you!- you’ll have your ride or die. Let’s share her and help her find her forever humans. 💛🐾💛🐾
See her full bio below.
Mamas is an empty nester and ready for her forever home! We saved Mamas along with her three puppies from Imperial County. Now it's time for Mamas to find her forever family and live the good life. This sweet lady is just over 4 years old and her compact size, at 10 pounds, is perfect for any size home. She gets along with dogs and would love to have another small breed pup to pal around with! She is crate trained and potty trained, and has been through basic and advanced obedience classes. Her fosters have started Canine Good Citizen classes with her. Slow intros with humans is a must though, as Mamas is still building trust after her street life as a stray before being rescued. Mamas would do welll in a home with another pup, and/or (only)older children or even just solo and spoiled! She of course would prefer humans that might allow her on the couch to hang with them, ready to give her snuggles when requested. Mamas is affectionate, playful and loves her walks. She's an easy dog who will continue to flourish with love and stability. If you would like to meet Mamas, please fill out an application.
Hi, my name is Watermelon but you can call me adorable! I am a 9 month old pug, petite at just 16 pounds. My favorite things to do are to play with my foster siblings, they are big dogs and I am not scared at all. I have a 4 year old human in my foster home who I love love love! I jump on him sometimes and he doesn’t like that, but I get so excited when I’m around him.
I think I am perfect just the way I am but foster mom thinks I need to try harder on my potty training. It’s hard cuz I didn’t have very good caregivers before I went to the shelter and all this stuff is new and hard for me. I don’t love the crate but I sleep there every night and stay there when my foster humans are gone. I will make a great guard dog because I will let you know when there are strangers afoot. I won’t do anything to protect you but I have a ferocious bark that will scare them away! (Watermelon’s foster disagrees with this statement, there is nothing ferocious about Watermelon.) Leash walking is also new so I guess I could try harder not to run in circles when I’m on a walk.
My favorite things are FOOD and TREATS, I like cheeses and cheeseburgers and all the snacks my human boy drops on the floor. Foster mom gives me great face massages, I love those! We have tons of fun toys to play with, and after all my play time zoomies I like to nap.
If you are looking for a new doggy to add to your home you should meet me! I do need someone patient to help me learn all the stuff good dogs need to know. You can fill out an adoption application here:

This sweet lady is just over 4 years old and her compact size, at 10 pounds, is perfect for any size home. She gets along with dogs and humans, however, she does prefer a proper introduction and a moment to build some trust with the humans she meets. Nymeria is 89% husky!
She is also off the market as her foster family has decided to keep her!
We knew Nymeria was a mix because of her size so her foster tested her and the DNA results are in! Can you guess her percentage of Siberian husky?
The deets:
Weight: 48 pounds and shorter than most huskies.
Temperament: Mostly mellow, she loves to run and play but she is also down to nap the afternoon away.
Sass level: 💯 If she has something to say she’s going to say it. Give her a command and half the time she will talk back first. Time for dinner? She’s not going to let you forget to feed her.
Drama level: Also 💯 Go big or go home is her motto.
Prey drive: Sadly for some gophers, 💯
Howl level: 0, while she will have a full on conversation she does not scream or howl like most huskies.
There were 4 other breeds detected: German Shepherd, malamute, Samoyed, and chow.
How husky is she?? Tune in tomorrow for the results!
🎶 We don’t talk about Bruno 🎶
YES WE DO, because he is dreamy! Look at that underbite ☺️
Bruno is a 3 year old pug mix. 28 pounds, crate trained, does great with dogs but not so much cats, and he is working on leash walking. Bruno is shy at first but treats or a tennis ball are ways into his heart.
If you are looking for an adventure buddy and want to meet Bruno you can fill out an adoption application here:

Help!
Turbo is being returned from adoption because he can’t live with the cat in his home. We desperately need an adopter or foster who can take in a big teenaged husky mix! Turbo is good with dogs and people, energetic and needs a home with structure and hopefully a dog friend to play with. No cats and no young kiddos.
If you are looking for a forever dog or just want to help out a dog in need you can fill out a foster or adoption application on our website.
