I’m Ry and this is my life with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome :)
✨ALL BODIES ARE BEACH BODIES✨
•
Scarred bodies. Floppy bodies. Bodies that walk and bodies that roll. Hairy bodies. Smooth bodies. And all the bodies in between. No body “needs” to be covered or hidden away unless you do so choose.
•
I took these photos when I decided to take my Pneumonia recovery to the beach. I felt disgusting: I hadn’t showered in days and hadn’t bothered to shave in twice as long. But I NEEDED the sun. I took these photos to remember that moment and now when I look back, I don’t see hairy legs or under eye circles from lack of sleep- I see a grown a$$ woman and a really cute dog enjoying a day at the beach. 🏖️♿️👙
•
So this is your reminder from Mama Ry:
1. Don’t use your wheelchair as a walker and hobble across the sand alone when you’re sick as hell.
And 2. Your body is YOURS to show or hide or decorate as you do see fit. You are deserving of comfort and style and all things in between. ☀️

Anyone who has spent more than about 10 minutes with me knows that I can be *A LOT.* I know that, you know that, the guy 2 blocks down the street knows that (& heard my laugh 5 minutes ago)- this is not new information to me. I have always had FAR too many thoughts and feelings and dreams and desires to change the world shoved into this lil crippled caucasian tattooed meat cage. I’ve lost new friends, old friends, partners, job opportunities- over & over again. I’ve been described as “passionate” “vivacious” and “damn I wish she’d stfu” 😅 and when I was younger I tried desperately to tone it all down. I was quiet in school (SHOCKING- I KNOW), I didn’t go after the things I wanted.
•
But then I realized something. My passion is and always has been my very favorite part of myself. My loud “too-much-ness” has been a litmus test for people FAR before my disability reared her head. It helped me realize who the real ones were and if they couldn’t take it- well, that’s on them.
•
I am a loud ball of southern sass who truly wakes up every day and thinks she can change the f*cking world and anyone who is scared of that passion is welcome to sit back and watch me shine. ❤️♿️✨
•
Shout out to my mom (Perri Mason Watercolor Artist) for always reminding me that my passion is what makes me me. ❤️ sharing because I know I’m not the only one who needed to hear this today.

✨Do I have 4 million photos from events over the last two weeks to post about? Yes.
Am I still going bump them out of the way to post about my new tattoos?? YES. ♿️❤️
I have been talking about getting the traditional symbol for accessibility on my middle finger for SO long! No, this is not some homage to how much I hate my disability- quite the opposite actually. I have struggled to accept my disabled body basically my entire life. My disability has shaped or had some play in every single aspect of every single major decision I’ve ever made. It isn’t something I can just ignore or pretend doesn’t exist. Over the years I have grown to realize that my disability isn’t the part I’ve struggled to adjust to- it’s the inaccessibility of the world around me. So this tattoo is my own person F*ck You to the inaccessible world around me. I’m a proud disabled human and that’s not changing, but I will continue to do my damnedest to make the world around me as inclusive and accessible as possible. ♿️
A huge shout out to and the whole family for bringing my idea to life! :) be back soon for more! 😂❤️

I cannot believe it has been one year since I was told that the best option for my body and quality of life was a Colostomy. 🚽💩
•
I had joked about it for years, sure! I’d experienced abdominal pain and intermittent f***l incontinence for EIGHT YEARS. That means for the majority of my 20s, I lived in absolute fear of being ANYWHERE without direct access to a bathroom. OH- and did I mention I began to lose my mobility during that time as well? The stress of being able to access a bathroom at any moment was MADDENING to say the least. I was missing work, missing time with friends, and quite literally wasting away in order to gain some control over my body. I went through test after test after treatment after medication trial- NOTHING worked. So when my colorectal surgeon mentioned Colostomy, me and my stretched out bowels said YES F*CKIN’ PLEASE.
•
I am now almost 8 months into my Colostomy journey and let me tell you, Colleen was a learning curve- but she gave me my life back. I’m no longer terrified of long road trips and I can eat (almost) whatever I want without second thought. Now I can’t imagine my life without my little rosebud and I will be singing her praises for the rest of my days. ❤️💩🚽♿️
•
To any other new ostomates out there feeling overwhelmed, trust me, it gets SO much better. If you have any questions about my own ostomy journey, feel free to drop them below! I love to teach and you can’t help what you don’t know!

✨HAPPY DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH Y’ALL!✨
🖤❤️💛🤍💙💚🖤♿️
July is Disability Pride Month and though I may be a little late posting, I am here and I am taking each day to celebrate our beautiful diverse community.
•
Living with a disability of any kind can be a difficult experience, to say the least. Between rampant ableism and inaccessibility- being disabled can be really really REALLY f*cking hard! But this month I like to take the time to appreciate every thing my disability has given me. I wouldn’t be nearly the healthcare practitioner and advocate that I am if I hadn’t first been a patient. As a wheelchair user working in a clinical setting, I get to shock/inspire people every single day to think outside of the box they have associated with disability. I love using fashion and my love of color to give every one something to stare at- but also to show that yes, I am a disabled human, I look and live differently than most, but I am here and I am living my life unapologetically. I refuse to allow my disability to stop me from doing anything I want to do and I’m so excited to continue to use my platform, this month and every month, to show other members of the disabled community that they can too.
•
Disability is not a bad word and I am so proud to be a member of our incredible community!
Happy Disability Pride Month Y’all!

No, this isn’t this insanely faded disabled parking from an abandoned strip mall, oh no, this, my friends, is actually the disabled parking at the San Diego DMV on Normal Street.
•
♿️THE DMV Y’ALL!!!!!!!!
•
Look, I realize this is where we hold the farmer’s market. I understand we live in SoCal and the sun and sand is hard on things, BUT COME ON! I had to circle twice because I couldn’t even tell where the lines were! It’s one of the most populated public GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS- and one of the first places new members of our community go- how about we do a bit better- shall we?? Y’all know nobody knows how to drive in DMV parking lots! Give a girl on wheels a chance! ♿️
✨HAPPY PRIDE MONTH Y’ALL✨
•
As we enter into my very favorite month of the year, allow Mama Ry to bestow upon you some reminders:
•
❤️ YALL MEANS ALL : Everyone is welcome at Pride. (Except bigots. And bigoted cops. But everyone else)
•
🧡 You cannot tell someone’s gender or sexuality just by looking at them. No I do not care how great your gaydar is.
•
💛Pride should be accessible. ♿️ (and if it’s not- let the organizers know!)
•
💚Family not accepting? I’m your mom now! Chosen family *IS* family for so many of us!
•
💙 The first Pride was a riot. Never forget your roots or how you got here. (Refer to what I said earlier about bigoted cops not being able welcome)
•
💜 There is no Pride in Genocide 🇵🇸 While you’re celebrating, don’t forget the horrors going on in the world. PRIDE FOR ALL.
•
💖 And last but not least, HAVE FUN! Whether this is your first Pride month out or your 30th, remember where our community came from, where you came from, and honor that as you celebrate!
Stay tuned for all the rainbows and celebrations all month long! ❤️🏳️🌈❤️♿️❤️

Little peak into my Sunday:
•
Loving this little peak of Summer San Diego is giving us this weekend. Finally getting to start a book written by my fantastic friend Naveh , earning my 1st sunburn of the year, and my very first time in a bikini as an ostomate. Now, I only went sun bathing on my roof, but it was still an interesting experience, as all first outings with anything medically visible and *new*.
•
Now I’ve put on almost 30lbs since my end colostomy surgery/Colleen’s creation back in November of last year. I’m relearning what my body looks and feels like at a healthy weight for the first time in…god, almost a decade. I love it but, ya girl has curves/cleavage- add a wheelchair AND an ostomy- going out in a bikini feels like stepping on the red carpet: EVERYONE is looking. To the boys in the hot tub taking photos of me sunbathing: that’s for the confidence boost, but if you ask my name next time, I’ll actually pose for you so you don’t look so creepy showing off “the hot girl with a sh*tbag” to your friends 😜
•
This will be a summer of exposure therapy for both me and Colleen and I cannot f*cking wait for the looks we shall receive. Time to normalize people with visible disabilities looking sexy AF! Let’s go!
——————-
Ps- if you’re an ostomate out tanning and your stoma makes it hard to lay on your stomach, try slipping your bag between the lounger halves (see last photo)- your stoma may thank you!

✨Accessibility Win: Coronado Island Dog Beach✨
•
Growing up in the mountains, we made our family trip to the ocean once a year. Once a year for one week I would swim and enjoy the warmth on my skin and feel like a normal functioning human. The salt water and warmer weather combination has always soothed the chronic pain of my disabled body like nothing else. I swore I would live near the water one day.
•
This summer marks 2 years of living in San Diego. I was so excited to be closer to my beloved ocean, but damn I would be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid of the access concerns that come with being a wheelchair user. Sand has NEVER been my friend and every “accessible beach mat” I’d seen ended SO far from the shore! Then Keven took me to Coronado Dog Park. The beach mat is SO long and takes me right down to the water! I teared up the first time I saw it! I know making our beaches accessible is no easy task, but you cannot imagine how much it means those of us with mobility limiting disabilities to be able to access the beach like anyone else.
•
Have you been to an accessible beach? How did it feel the first time you were able to access the beach with ease? Do you have a favorite? Drop them below! I can’t wait to hear about them!

I was so proud to accept when The Ms. Wheelchair California Leadership Institute asked me to emcee this year’s competition at Abilities Expo LA. It was SUCH a joy to be on the other side and not shaking waiting for the judges to ask me questions…or accidentally saying the f-word in my acceptance speech at my crowning…which was hosted in a church. 🤦🏻♀️ These women are absolutely amazing and I enjoyed getting to know each of them and can’t wait to see watch them continue along their advocacy journeys. ✨❤️♿️👑✨

✨HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WHEELCHAIR DAY!✨
•
My wheels have taken me anywhere and everywhere I needed to go: from one side of the country to the other- from bedside nursing to exploring the world- I cannot explain to you how thankful I am for the quality of life and independence my wheelchair has given me. Without it, I don’t ever think I would’ve been brave enough to leave my hometown.
