CMG is proud to announce we are collaborating with the Petaluma River Park Foundation in the transformation of Petaluma River Park into a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming park for all!

Petaluma River Park is a beloved 24-acre public park in the heart of downtown Petaluma. To foster equity and inclusion in the co-creation process, the park design will be informed by deep and meaningful engagement from the Petaluma community. Petaluma River Park Foundation's engagement plan is focused on lifting voices that have historically been excluded from park planning.

The project is funded by the California State Coastal Conservancy and the team is comprised of equity-driven, community engagement experts, Kimzin Creative and environmental scientists and designers, Prunuske Chatham, Inc. The team is collaborating closely with community members to ensure that the values, needs, and aspirations for the park are inclusive and equitable.

We are thrilled to be embarking on this co-creation journey and look forward to providing more project updates! Learn more about Petaluma River Park at www.petalumariverpark.org

We are excited to share that our work on the SOMA Transit Gardens (aka Yerba Buena Gardens Gateway Project) won the Excellence in Community Beautification Award from the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District! The project aims to improve the quality of life on the street for residents and visitors of Yerba Buena District. The project enhances the openness of the gardens to the public and new visitors brought by the recently completed Central Subway Muni Train Station. It also provides elements of comfort within the rich garden experience to activate the spaces and creates a nurturing encounter with nature in the urban environment 🌳🌷 Congratulations to the team: Caltrans, SFMTA, Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, Mel Vera Cruz, Dee Ja’e Paeste + Moscone Convention Center!

In collaboration with the Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy to beautify and clean public open spaces, CMG designed and planted a new mix of drought-tolerant landscaping including succulents, shrubs, perennials, agave plants, and trees along Yerba Buena Gardens' 3rd and 4th Street embankments! This animation shows the progression of the planting on 4th Street over time - becoming denser and more colorful for the community to enjoy 🌳🌸 The project was funded by Clean California Local Grant and Caltrans and includes new, vibrant community art installations, cleaning, and monthly volunteer litter clean-up.

The Moscone Center design improves connection to the neighborhood through paseos and pathways, seamlessly connecting The Children’s Garden with the Yerba Buena Gardens, Children’s Creativity Museum, and LeRoy King Carousel. Learn more about Moscone Center at cmgsite.com/places/moscone-center

To define distinct spaces for its multi-generational users, the Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground design choreographs topography, verticality, and compactness in a half-acre space. The park spans 40 vertical feet and consists of three levels—an upper court, middle playground, and lower clubhouse. The community space celebrates history with the restored pagoda and preserved murals, while providing more opportunities for recreation, access, and circulation. Learn more about the park + playground at cmgsite.com/places/willie-woo-woo-wong-playground

East Cut Sports + Dog Park will be a new public open space in The East Cut neighborhood of downtown San Francisco—a unique public amenity for the emerging area connecting the new Transbay Terminal to Folsom Street. Spanning three blocks, the park is located below the existing bus ramp with 25 percent of the site open to the sky. CMG's park design takes advantage of the space and acts as an innovative response to the urban site. The park programming is distinctive—ranging from a recreation area to a beer garden, to a multilevel pavilion with retail and amenities—meant to attract people from around the city throughout the year! Learn more about East Cut Sports + Dog Park at cmgsite.com/places/east-cut-sports-and-dog-park Client: San Francisco Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure, East Cut Community Benefit District Project Team: Y.A Studio, Arup Group, San Francisco Department of Public Works, San Francisco MTA, Caltrans, San Francisco Transbay Joint Powers Authority, San Francisco Arts Commission

Planted stormwater gardens at Mission Creek Stormwater Park are designed to collect, convey, and treat storm events up to 0.75 inches of rain in 24 hours. The gardens convey and treat stormwater through a main channel. During medium and high flow storm events, bioretention basins along the channel are then filled and activated. Mission Creek Stormwater Park's three separate stormwater gardens prevent flooding in Mission Bay and enhance the ocean's health and ecology by filtering out pollutants such as dust, fine grain soils, and oils from stormwater. Flood Park is San Mateo's beloved 25-acre community park - host to family picnics, large gatherings, bird watching, and active recreation for the past 86 years. In 2015, significant park improvements were identified and demanded to better serve the community. Building on the community's efforts of Reimagine Flood Park, we partnered with the San Mateo County Parks Department to make the collaborative vision into reality - Realize Flood Park. Pacific Overlook offers sufficient detail and sculptural form to assert a quiet presence on a slice of the California coast. Balancing openness and intricacy, the materials and design vocabulary reflect the industrial history of San Pedro. Design details direct visitors’ attention with materiality, texture, and shadow: the way the seat feels, the high contrast of one surface in full sun and the other in shade. #cmgsite #cmglandscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #cmgplaces #publicspace #sanpedro #california #pacificoverlook

We make evocative places—human spaces that engender beauty, emotion, and wonder. The simplicity and openness of Daggett Park are complemented by fluid forms, robust materials and attention to craft and detail to create an idiosyncratic and welcoming space. Three elements of the park are an exploration of white concrete; the Tilted Lawn Sculpture is cast-in-place concrete, the Penta Steps are multiples sizes of precast concrete, and the Dog Run walls are shotcrete. - The Titled Lawn element anchors the corner of the park with its fluid poured-in-place concrete form. The sculpture creates space for soaking up sun or watching a community event on the sloped lawn. - The Penta-Step, located in the center of the park, is inspired by the sense of discovery found in natural landscapes. It is made up of hundreds of precast units of varying heights to create one cohesive sculpture for sitting and playing – a dozen stone units are hidden in the sculpture waiting to be discovered. - The curving dog park walls create a beautiful enclosure to the dog park. At night, dozens of mini amble lights sparkle on the wall inside the dog park. While these three sculptural elements are made up of a similar white concrete material, all three together celebrate different concrete construction methods. https://www.cmgsite.com/places/daggett-park/ Client: @equityres Project Team: @davidbakerarchitects, Luk & Associates James E. The transformative 500-acre redevelopment project creates a new San Francisco neighborhood – rejoining a former dilapidated military base back into the surrounding communities of Bay View. The new neighborhood destination is home to Hillpoint Park, Hillside Central Park, Innes Court Park, as well as 16 pocket parks – designed as a series of distinct public spaces to accommodate community gardens, dining terraces, overlooks, and informal play areas, all with spectacular views. Beginning in 2020, after 20 years in business, CMG set out on a 2 year-long visual + messaging exercise to develop a new firm-wide brand and website platform that reflects the people of the practice, speaks to the places we create, and highlights the values of our practice today and into the next decade. With the collaborative design guidance of Mende Design, we are excited to launch our new identity and website, where you can explore our places, people, and practice in a more interactive and experiential way. Our mission is the same—to increase social and ecological wellbeing through artful design. We have explored and expanded upon these values through new key messaging, ideas, and project types. Meta's sprawling campus in Menlo Park is a contemporary workplace that highlights the importance of culture and place of business. Since 2011, we have worked in close collaboration with Gehry Partners and a team of ecologists, engineers, arborists, and soil scientists to remediate, repurpose, and re-envision the campus.

In October, CMG hosted “Community Design”, the second salon in its three-part Equity in Landscape Architecture series, with the goal of learning how to go beyond traditional community engagement processes by working with communities to build trust, capacity, and to define and design projects together. Four panelists—Keta Price, David de la Peña, Diane Jones Allen and Dr. Antwi Akom— briefly presented about their work bringing communities and designers together to create more just places followed by a discussion about the merits of traditional participation processes, the role and control of the designer, and the importance of representation on design teams.
