Today, the Fourth of July, we celebrate 78 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the United States of America. On 4 July 1946, the U.S. officially recognized Philippine independence and sovereignty, and established diplomatic ties with the Philippines through the Treaty of General Relations and Protocol signed in Manila. Seventy-eight years later, Philippines-U.S. relations are at an all-time high, buoyed by strong diplomatic, military, economic and people-to-people ties. The Philippines is America’s oldest treaty ally in Asia, while more than 4.2 million Filipinos and Filipino Americans call the U.S. their home. Mabuhay! đŸ‡”đŸ‡đŸ‡ș🇾 #PHinSF

[SOUND ON] The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco joins the Filipino nation in the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor)—the 82nd anniversary of the Fall of Bataan during the Second World War. Following three months of brutal yet brave resistance to foreign invaders, Filipino and American forces formally ended their defense of the Bataan Peninsula on 9 April 1942. It was followed by the forcible transfer of almost 80,000 Filipino and American soldiers from Mariveles, Bataan to Camp O’Donnell, Tarlac—in what would be known in history as the Bataan Death March. In recognition of their courage and heroism, Filipino World War II veterans in 2016 were collectively conferred the United States Congressional Gold Medal—the highest civilian award the U.S. government can bestow. #Kagitingan2024 #PHinSF
