What is Photo Expressionism?
Photo expressionism at its inception begins with a photographic image. The photographer uses multiple in-camera and post-production digital techniques, combined with inspiration and true artistic talent, to create a masterful piece of fine art. Like the Expressionist painters of the early 20th century, the photo Expressionists of the 21st century seek to express emotional experience rather than physical reality. The addition of overlays, underlays, and texture gives the images a striking, realistic hand-painted look. The final piece often looks like a painting and is characterized by its boldness and visual intensity further blurring the gap between photographic and more traditional fine art.
What is Photo Impressionism?
It is a style of photography where the photographer uses long exposure, intentional camera movement, double or multiple exposure and other techniques, to add blur, motion, and interest to a photo. By using the camera in this way, the photographer intentionally creates a dreamy look reminiscent of the impressionist art of the 19th century. The perception of the artist is what matters in photo impressionism. It is what the eye of the photographer envisions and the capture of that vision. Photo Impressionism can be summed up as unconventionally beautiful, abstract in nature, and, most often, presented in large format which enhances its beauty.
Abstract photography consists of images created using photography concepts and materials such as intentional camera movement, bokeh, light painting, smoke/dye in water, reflections, architecture, macro, high-speed water drops, interesting patterns and others. Abstract photographers use perspective, movement, and light to transform the world we see into an unexpected, often unrecognizable image. It moves beyond the representational into creating images of pure imagination. A great deal is left up to the imagination of both the artist and the viewer. This is where the power of abstract photography lies. It expresses a truly unique vision and that vision is in the eyes of the beholder.

Janet's photos have won numerous medals and awards in local and national competitions and she has been honored by CAPA with the distinction of FCAPA (Fellowship in the Canadian Association for Photographic Art).
The natural surroundings of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast inspire her to creatively use her camera. Janet blends and transforms the natural palette, coalescing the ethereal essence of this beautiful landscape to bring into focus the beauty and calm of the environment. Her work has been published in the Canadian Camera Magazine, newspapers and galleries.
"My desire is to capture the essence of the natural coastal beauty through creative photography techniques such as intentional camera movement, multiple exposure, long exposure and digital processing."
Pacific Art Group welcomes Dr. Connie Allen.
Dr. Connie Allen holds a PhD in Animal Behavior, where her thesis focused on the social behavior of male African elephants, and the relationships between bull elephants. With years spent observing and understanding animals in the wild, came the opportunity for unique ways to photograph wild animals, their behavior, and rare moments in their lives. Her fascination with animals and knowledge of why they do what they do, combined with a lifelong artistic talent helps her achieve striking, empathetic and intimate imagery.
Connie is an outdoor enthusiast with an eye for the spectacular natural scenes she comes across. Her wildlife photography is work to be admired. While her life’s work might be about elephants, her captivating photos convey all of Africa’s beauty, as well as the beauty of Oman, Croatia, India, and Switzerland. When not directly studying the animals, she holds so dear, Connie lives in Zurich, Switzerland.
We are so proud to have Lynne Douglas join Pacific Art Group. Her photography is distinctive, unique, and simply gorgeous. Below, a selection of her iconic seascapes.
