Have you ever made a mistake or straight up did a bad or evil thing in your life that caused you or others pain (intentionally or unintentionally, planned or unplanned)?
I'm ashamed to say that I have... more times than I can count (to make matters worse).
Whenever those memories creep into my mind, I feel absolutely terrible, and I always ask myself: "What were you thinking, man?! How can you be so selfish (or "dumb", or "such a jerk" or [fill in the blank])?!"
Then I proceed to beat myself up emotionally, and maybe reach for some ice cream, or pan dulce or something else to numb down the pain... which is not wise, at all, of course.
Then I start to reframe my mindset and remember quotes like the one in the image: "Your past does NOT determine your future."
The Good Book says in 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
That is SO reassuring and healing to my soul!
I think that if you feel regret and remorse for your past bad deeds, it's a good thing!
"What?! How so? Aren't you contradicting yourself, Dude?"
Hear me out...
I think it's a good thing because, to me, that means that the person still has a soft, tender heart and that his/her conscience is not charred or burnt to the point where it doesn't feel remorse or brings them to repentance any more.
HOWEVER...
Staying in that place could bring a LOT of negative emotions or consequences, including:
- Shame
- Guilt
- Low self-esteem
- Anger
- Bitterness
Those things could lead to other issues, including:
- Health problems
- Anti-social behavior
- Substance abuse
..etc, etc, etc.
That is why I think it's best to:
1. Ask for forgiveness whenever possible.
2. Forgive yourself.
3. Grow spiritually by spending time in the Word of God, the Bible; and spending time with God through prayer.
Your past does NOT determine your future...
(Unless you let it).
