After 30 years of writing and performing some of gospel's top charting songs such as, “God ‘s Gotta A Blessing With Your Name on It”, “Jesus I Love You,” “Emmanuel,” “Battlefield” and “Just In Time,” we are blessed to have him perform in San Mateo at Music on Mack Family Way! 3-6 PM, 229 North Grant Street.

What a way to spend a Sunday! Erika Paul – Jazz Artist & Music Specialist holds an A.A. degree in Music from College of San Mateo (CSM), a B.A. degree in Jazz Performing from San Jose State University (SJSU), is a BMI artist, Harry Fox publisher, AFM and NMPA member and is that rare career music artist that elegantly balances music performance, teaching, songwriting and recording, finding herself equally comfortable as not only being supportive as a sideman, but also as a bandleader, teacher and self-published independent “indie” recording artist.

Erika enjoys performing locally as well as nationally and internationally, as a soloist and in small combos up to full 17-piece big bands, she’s extremely comfortable reading arranged charts as well as soloing on both piano and vocals, loves teaching private piano, voice and guitar, giving clinics and masterclasses, writing and recording in the prolific way original indie artists often do. All her physical, digital and streaming album work is available online worldwide and everywhere.

Being a mother has been one of my greatest accomplishments! I hope everyone enjoyed their Sunday as I know it can be difficult as well! For those who were able to celebrate with a crunch cake….I hope it made the day a little sweeter!

There doesn’t seem to be any conceivable way to stop a Black Woman in motion-one with dedication, fire, energy, and ambition. Claire Mack - mother of three, skilled seamstress, active participant in the San Mateo School System, part-time college student, hostess of KGO’s Bay scene - exemplifies this type of spirited woman.

It would be difficult to pin-point the way she began her active career, but one might well look to her home for the answer. “It began as I was sitting at home watching tv, seeing their vast wasteland of programming. There was no blackness”. So she began her own individualized protest movement, sending concerned, often angry letters to TV stations, commercial enterprises and others that seemed to be unresponsive to the needs of the black community.

She recalls an early commercial that employed a black woman washing clothes- naturally not her own, but “Mr. Charlie’s.” “ I told them if they can’t show a Black person washing their own clothes, then they should take it off air.”

On one occasion, Mrs. Mack took on all the major department stores in San Francisco demanding to know why Blacks and Asians were not represented in their advertising efforts. She received a response from L.A Shultz, at the time Vice President and General Manager of I. Magnin’s Northern Stores. Mr. Shultz spoke to his companies policy of line drawing advertising, “Our line drawings are not intended to be representative of any particular person or persons and our artists do not work from models”.
