The Prader Willi program launched earlier this year and is already making a profound difference in the lives of the people we support and their families. “Since Anne moved into the de Lone House her life, and ours, have changed dramatically. She is happy in her day program, horseback riding, swimming regularly at the YMCA, and even loves the special diet that has been developed for her. She is forming friendships with her housemates, and is fond of her staff. Anne’s life is so much fuller. Lifehouse has provided a wonderful environment for the four individuals at the De Lone House. Management and staff training specifically for Prader Willi Syndrome issues has been wonderful and you can see the care that is put in each and every day. We feel very fortunate to have Anne in the house and look forward to a long and successful life for Anne there.” -Stephen Meeker Lifehouse Parent & Board Member

Encouraging and teaching life skills is a fundamental component of the Lifehouse Supported Living Program. This helps the people we support live as independently as possible. When Stephanie started at Lifehouse in 2011 she needed a great deal of help with math, understanding the value of money, and budgeting. Carol, her Direct Support Staff worked with her diligently for several years; going to the bank with her to make deposits or to withdraw money. Each time helping her to focus on the task. Fast-forward to 2024, Stephanie now drives herself to the bank to do her banking independently.

:: “Oscar loves living with new friends and caring staff in a safe environment at the de Lone House. He’s thrilled to be pursuing his goals and interests: working with animals at day program, exercising in the home gym, going on long walks, playing online games, staying up to date on politics and sports in his free time. Thanks to the thoughtful program structure, staff training, and opportunities to meet up before move-in, Oscar’s transition to his new home has been so smooth, that he rarely wants to come home to visit. We’re so happy for him.”

Prader Willi Program Launch :: De Lone House is the first Prader Willi Syndrome program in Marin County. This unique program offers a glowing alternative to people with this disability. Historically, individuals with Prader Willi Syndrome have had limited options for support and care, housing issues, day programs due to the need for food security, and a high level of behavioral components including anxiety and OCD. This program allows the individuals supported a true chance at independence and community integration.
You can read more about the Prader Willi Program and the positive impact that it is already having for the people supported and their families in our Spring Newsletter.

:: “Everyone is unique. Helping a person feel comfortable with who they are is a great way to support someone. You can empower them to become independent and be their true self. Growth happens by putting in the work little by little, each day and over time varying degrees of independence can become a reality for the person supported.” - Felicia Romero, Associate Director of Programs & Services
:: Lifehouse and the I/DD community need your help! Please sign the Open Letter to Governor Newsom from the Developmental Disabilities Community Re: Values & Priorities in State Spending. For decades, disability services have been chronically underfunded. Californians with disabilities are relying on the state to keep its promise to increase funding. This funding is critical to address the workforce crisis, improve access to services and supports and ensure that Californians with disabilities can THRIVE, not just survive. :: “I’ve been with Lifehouse for 7 years, and for 5 years I have been the Primary Counselor for Carri. It is truly rewarding to watch her progress and growth throughout our time together. She has gained the confidence to engage in activities that she finds interesting, has become more social and now also takes the initiative to get things fixed around her apartment. These are things that she was probably always capable of doing, but needed the right tools and a little help to get there. I find great joy in helping others succeed, and it is wonderful that an organization like Lifehouse exists to connect people who have a passion for supporting others with people who need help the most.”-Charisse Valanza, Primary Support Counselor

The Legislative Breakfast was held on April 19th in collaboration with the Golden Gate Regional Center (GGRC), the Service Provider Advisory Committee (S**C), and the AdvoCats. Jessica Perez, a Lifehouse DSP gave a stand-out speech touching on the myriad of ways that she supports the people that she works with, the importance of supporting people with I/DD, and the stress and hard work that all too often interferes with continued employment for most DSPs. Despite all of this she shared, “I love my job! How many of us can say that? I say it again, I LOVE MY JOB! I find purpose in the work I do; this work challenges me and allows me to learn something new every day. I know my work is important and that it helps the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.”
