"Sam entered our shelter a stray on June 20th, presenting with abrasions on his head and around his eye. The origins of these injuries are unclear, but we promptly initiated a treatment plan. Subsequently, we discovered that Sam had been involved in an altercation with another dog, resulting in injuries to the other dog.
Sam has shown a friendly demeanor towards our kennel staff and is generally cooperative when leashed. However, he exhibits a significant prey drive, which occasionally makes it challenging for staff and volunteers to redirect his focus away from other animals. During a playgroup session, Sam displayed assertive behavior towards other dogs. Durning, playgroup Sam growled when a staff reached down to grab the dragline when he under the table, however at the same time another our female helper dog was walking by which is uncertain whether this response was directed towards staff or another dog.
Given these observations, Sam requires more specialized behavioral support than our shelter can provide. He would benefit greatly from comprehensive behavior modification and a full assessment to address his specific needs.
Sam's deadline for exiting the shelter is Saturday, August 3rd.
We deeply appreciate your continued support and collaboration." -SBCAS for more information, please contact the Santa Barbara Shelter by stopping by the shelter or call

Meet Catfish – ID Please share on nextdoor

Hello, I’m Catfish, a young pup who found his way to the shelter as a stray.

I’m a male, white West Highland White Terrier mix, and I’m about 10 months old.

I weigh around 12.60 lbs and have been here at the shelter since August 6, 2024.

Right now, I’m staying at the SBCAS shelter in Lompoc, eagerly waiting for my forever home. If you’re looking for a loyal companion, I’m available for adoption!

The shelter is located at 1501 W Central Ave, Lompoc, CA, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Come meet me!

Meet Venus, our resident fetch aficionado! She’s got the perfect throw—close enough to keep you engaged but still showing off her skills. What a star!

Venus came to us on 6/7/24, rescued by a kind-hearted Samaritan who found Venus alongside an Anatolian Shepherd mix. This thoughtful person kept them safe until our team could step in. Although Venus was initially timid, she was easy to work with, even during her microchipping. Our vet staff echoes the same sentiment: shy but oh-so-sweet. Volunteers describe Venus as a friendly, easy-to-walk companion.

In a recent playgroup with our social butterfly, Ray, Venus was polite but preferred to observe rather than join in the fun.

Currently, Venus is waiting to meet her forever family at our Lompoc Shelter on 1501 W. Central Avenue.

Please help our pups by fostering, adopting one of our dogs or volunteering at one of our shelters. We need our communities help more than ever. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Please share, comment and/or tag to help our pets get seen ➡️ Adopted, ➡️ Foster, ➡️ Rescued! We can’t Thank you enough for helping us find loving homes for our homeless pets in our community 🙏🤞

My least favorite post to write.

Hi all, it’s me Ash and I have been working on my Christmas songs. The one that applies to me is called “Last Christmas”. See, last Christmas I gave someone my heart, but the very next day they gave me away. This year to save my life, I’m looking for someone special. I have been given a deadline of December 26th to be adopted or rescued. How’s that for holiday cheer? I’ve come to expect it since no one asks to see me, ever. Being a black dog in the shelter sucks. Everyone is looking for a dog who has “unique markings”. Well, I don’t have that but make up for it in class. See, I am a routine- oriented guy and that is not happening here at the shelter. It is not the lack of caring by staff, it is that there are way too many dogs. Speaking of dogs, I don’t need to play with other dogs but can make friends with another dog if they aren’t annoying. Not sure how I feel about cats or kids right now so let’s pass on those. What I do know is that I am so relaxed outside the shelter and enjoy the quiet home life. A fluffy bed, a good football game, some snacks, a yard to sniff in would be heaven. Interested in saving my life and being BFF’s? If so, let my advocate know right away so she can see if we are a match. If you haven’t been looking for my awesome self you can still help save me by simply sharing and telling everyone you know. Hoping and praying here at the Goleta shelter. My advocate can be reached at [email protected]. Hope to hear from you today! XO-Ash

We need your help in spreading the news that our beautiful, Ash, is scheduled to be euthanized on December 26th. For more information, please contact Gabby at [email protected].

If you look closely at the first photo of Ash, you’ll find three powerful words written by Maya Angelou: “Still I Rise.” These words resonate on so many different levels, especially when I think about Ash’s situation. Ash has been in the shelter system for 354 days, since he arrived as a stray on December 23rd. It’s been almost a whole year without a home or a family. Even the most adaptable of dogs struggle in shelter environments, and Ash is no exception. Ash is barrier reactive, meaning he barks and growls at his kennel door.

Every day, Ash eagerly waits at his day yard door, excited to greet shelter staff and his volunteer friends. He adores human interaction and is affectionate and loving. During his time in a foster home, Ash enjoyed belly rubs and proved to be a well-behaved house guest. He is smart, knowing commands like sit, paw, down, and come. Ash is crate trained, house trained, and can be left alone without causing any mess. Although Ash had a challenging past, he thrives when he’s part of a family’s daily activities. The perfect home for him would be an adult-only (older kids) with no other pets. Ash has shown progress during walks with other dogs, he is playful, goofy, and loves treats. Ash also enjoys curling up on the couch to watch holiday movies on Netflix. Ash has taught us about resilience and the importance of finding love and stability. He is tired of shelter life and deserves a loving home. Will you be the one to provide that for him?

Unfortunately, Ash’s journey has taken a tragic turn. On December 10th, early in the morning, Ash, feeling overwhelmed by the lack of help in the shelter, made a terrible decision. A staff member unknowingly placed their fingers through the kennel door to quickly open it, and Ash bit them. As a result, Ash must be removed from our shelter by December 26th, the day after Christmas.  Help us find Ash a Home.

So, If you were looking to help our Santa Maria, Lompoc, and Santa Barbara animal shelters survive our ANIMAL SHELTER CRISIS, - here it is! Our Santa Maria and Santa Barbara Shelter are in DESPERATE need of FOSTERS and we especially need fosters with dog experience! But more than anything, we need people committed to helping an animal in need! So let’s start with the Green and Blue Dogs.

We have Green dogs that are easier to handle and these dogs have been on day fosters or foster. So we know a lot about them. If you are looking for an easy foster ask for a green dog.

Blue dogs are similar to our green dogs but might need a little training. If you are ok with fostering a dog that needs a little help settling into your home, ask for a blue dog.

Additionally, we are seeking foster homes that can take in a solo pet! We have so many dogs living at our Santa Maria and Santa Barbara Shelters for no other reason than they cannot live with other pets, or may need slow introductions to new people, or taught proper leash skills. While these may make a dog’s initial introduction more challenging, all of these behaviors are manageable, and we have an experienced team here to support you.

Folks prepare yourselves for the one and only Vincent. Vincent is pictured wearing a Grinchmas bandana over his all natural tuxedo fur markings. Dressed to impress, bow ties? Pfft, I wear them in my sleep.

Now, let’s talk about my age. The shelter staff believes I’m a sprightly 2 years and 2 months old. I may be young, but don’t let that fool you. I’ve mastered the art of giving sloppy kisses, my friends. It’s an art form that can’t be taught or replicated. You’ll feel like you won the lottery every time my slobbery smooches land on your face.

But wait, there’s more! I am a champ at leash walking. None of that pulling nonsense for me. No, no, I glide along like a professional ice skater, gracefully strutting my stuff. I’ve got more leash skills than a magician has tricks up their sleeve.

Oh, and did I mention that I’ve been on a day foster? That means the folks know all about me, inside and out. And what do they have to say? Well, prepare yourself for this - they call me well-behaved, a dream to be around. That’s right, folks, I’m the pup of your dreams, and I come with impeccable manners.

Now, let’s talk numbers. On the scale, I tip it at a solid 61.00 lbs. I’ve got just the right amount of floof to cuddle with, without being mistaken for a panda bear. Although, I must admit, I do have a panda bear-like charm.

Since October 20, 2023, I’ve been patiently waiting for someone like you. You can find me at 5473 Overpass Rd in Goleta, just waiting for you to stroll on in between 10 am and 6 pm, Tuesdays through Sundays. Believe me, my friend, meeting me will be the highlight of your day. I guarantee it.
