NOW IS THE TIME TO SPRAY! - Powdery Mildew or a fungus called "Erysiphe necator", is a very destructive infection that can result in leaf and fruit distortion by killing surface tissues before they reach maturity. Severe infection leads to leaf and fruit drop, as well as death of the shoot tip. Spore production produces a white powdery appearance on the infected surfaces. Later in the season, the production of "cleistothecia" can give infected tissues a distinctive red to black speckled appearance .
Disease management is based primarily on fungicidal sprays. I like to use a organic spray such as JMS Stylet oil. Early prevention is essential. Prebloom and the bloom periods are the periods of peak mildew susceptibility for developing fruit. So aim your fungicide dollars here! Don't wait! As soon as you see prebloom developing, start your spraying! Good luck!

Pruning has a depressing or stunting effect on the grape vine. It's the time of the removal of living vegetative parts at any time and decreases the capacity or total productive ability of the vine. Capacity is largely determined by the number, size, and quality of the leaves and the length of time during which they are active. Pruning during the dormant season reduces the total number of leaves that will be formed during the growing season by restricting the number of shoots, and also delays the formation of the main leaf area. It thus reduces both the total leaf area and the length of time during which most of the leaves function. To the grower, pruning has two pronounced effects. It concentrates the activities of the vine into the parts left, but diminishes the total capacity of the vine for growth and fruit production. Correct pruning consists in achieving the first effect to extend required, while minimizing the second as much as possible. Happy pruning season!
