Ever been curious about the life cycle of the farmed abalone you see at the Saturday Fishermen’s Market? Read below to learn more about this amazing process from the folks at the farm! 😍
At the Cultured Abalone Farm we grow red abalone from larvae to point of sale. Each abalone is hand fed and hard harvested throughout their time on the farm. It takes our regular 4 piece per lb abalone between 3-5 years to reach sales size and our larger sizes such as the Demis and Balthazars can take much longer to reach sales size.
Kelp is harvested from local kelp beds using the F/V Ocean Harvest, the only operating kelp harvester in CA! Giant kelp is a perennial, and we only harvest by trimming the shoots which reach the surface. The reproductive part of the kelp is at the base, and our harvesting is sustainable by design, we rely on kelp as a healthy forage for our abalone and urchin.
After being harvested, the kelp is then brought to the farm where it is chopped and distributed to the tanks by hand. We work with kelp every week of the year, all year, and we are highly tuned in to the seasonality and growth of the kelp resource. The kelp shown in these pictures is springtime kelp, with clean blades and a dark rich color.
Come down this Saturday and try some delicious farmed abalone for yourself! 😋

🚨New vendor alert!!🚨 Please welcome Randy Hughes to the Saturday Fishermen’s Market lineup!
Randy grew up locally in Goleta. He was practically raised on the water, fishing, surfing, sailing, and diving. Fishing became Randy’s #1 passion and all the hours he spent on our local waters rewarded him with a wealth of knowledge of the fisheries within them. Randy attended Santa Barbara City College where he earned his associates degree and quickly realized he needed to work outdoors. He worked as a commercial diver in the Santa Barbara harbor for 7 years before his passion for both fishing and quality seafood led him to commercial fishing. Randy spent the past few years as a deckhand learning the trade and now runs his own F/V Freedom, his 22’ Eastern, along the coast and out at the islands to supply local markets. Randy is an approved vendor for a variety of finfish species including Halibut, Tuna, White Seabass, Sole, Mackerel, and Ocean Whitefish.
Be sure to give his account a follow and stop by this Saturday to meet him yourself and try some of his delicious catch!
Happy birthday Joe! We hope your day is wonderful and thank you for all your contributions to the Saturday Fishermen’s Market! 🎉🦞🦀
