I'm a visual artist working in Carpinteria, CA. I've just started a daily painting project where I

Painting a bit larger from a small study I did a while back, hoping to use this piece in an upcoming show, the last slide is the study if you want to compare.

Time at the beach means time for more birds, I love painting these guys.

I painted this one small because I wasn’t sure if I’d like the end result, but I love it, so planning a larger version soon. The only question is how big should it be? 🤔

Well the kids are out of school for summer, hello chaos and endless requests for snacks 😂 here’s hoping I can sneak in at least a little painting time 🤞🏼
Backlit Leadbetter, oil on panel 8x8 inches.

Shoreline Park, I’m thankful for the little playground perched on top of this seaside bluff, I’ll probably be spending a lot of time here again now that the baby walks.
Oil on cradled panel, 8x8 inches, available.

My favorite season is mustard season! I love when those little yellow flowers start covering everything. Here’s “Hendry’s Beach Day”, 6x6 oil on panel. Check out the last slide to see my reference photo.

Sharing the painting vs. the reference. Because I always enjoy seeing these :) Let me know if you do too!

The shape of the trees and color of this green field is what drew me paint this one. Lots of room for interpretation when painting greens.

I posted a few days ago comparing a gouache vs. oil version of two paintings from my beach rocks series. Thought I would share some favorites from said series. This is a subject that I keep coming back to, for me it has everything, I get to play with light and shadows, the reflections in the puddles as well as the wet sand, and the opportunity to be abstract and a bit more expressive with shape and lines. Which one is your favorite? Mine is number 6!

Devereux Slough Trees, I love when I find new water to paint, it’s one of my favorite things. Oil on panel, 12x12 inches.

Another oil vs. gouache painting set where I think oil is the winner. What do you think?
These were both painted back when I was doing a series of beach rock sunsets, I loved that series.

Sunset over the 101. Freeways under construction aren’t always paint worthy, but sometimes that light hits just right ☀️

Just trying to capture that late afternoon light on these Carpinteria palm trees.

Played around with an acrylic underpainting again with this one, I have to say I didn’t feel quite as successful with it this time, it’s such a different way of working for me. Also not sure what to title this one, so if anyone has suggestions 😂
Oil and acrylic on cradled panel, 9x12 inches.

Devereux Slough, I’ve never ventured out to paint here before, but I’ll be back!

I tried something new with this piece. I was painting it for a fundraising auction and I needed it to be dry quickly. So I painted the first layer (I usually only do one so this felt extra weird) in acrylic, and then I “topped it off” with oil paint in areas that needed blending/brightening. And it worked! It dried much more quickly than if I had painted the whole thing in oil. Does anyone else work this way? What are the prose and cons for you?
Acrylic and oil on cradled panel, 12x12 inches. Sold.

Finally a gouache vs. oil post where I think the oil version might stand a chance as the favorite 🙃 Oil is the first slide, gouache is second. Let me know your pick! These turned out surprisingly similar!
Oil on panel, 8x8 inches, and gouache on illustration board 5x7, both sold.

Sands Beach, it was so windy and so cold when I grabbed my reference shot for this painting. Glad I wasn’t planning a plein air session, it would have been so painful 🥶 Planning on a slightly larger oil version for a show in July.

Gouache on crescent illustration board, 5x7.

That sunrise glow ☀️ Mornings in Santa Barbara are exceptionally beautiful, and while I can’t always stop to paint them I’m always filling up my camera roll with references for later.

A good tip is to paint them as soon as you can afterwards so that the memory is fresh in your brain and you’re not relying on just what the photo is telling you.

The best time of day on these mountains, it’s always so fleeting, it’s hard not to just stop and watch the shadows and colors change.

Carpinteria Bluffs, still one of my favorite painting spots. Every season brings something new, my favorite is mustard season, which should be soon! 😍

Channel Island Kayakers. I painted this from a VERY old reference photo, I think it was 2010 when we went? I’ve also been feeling super overwhelmed so these next few paintings are going to be only 4x4 inches. Going even smaller has helped take the pressure off and also brought more joy back into the painting process for me. A little 4x4 vacation.
Oil on linen panel, 4x4 inches.

Another experiment with a high key landscape, this one was tricky because so much of it was in shadow, maybe not the best choice for a high key but I still like it.

The prettiest time of day…
I just can’t get enough of the colors and shadows of these hills around sunset. I keep striving to capture it in paint, but always feel I’m falling a little short. Scroll through to peek at my reference photo.
Oil on panel, 6x6 inches.

I posted this a while back in my stories, one cliff painted 3 different ways. First in gouache, then oil, then oil again but in a high key. In the poll the gouache version was overwhelmingly preferred, what do you think?

Photos from Sharon Schock's post 02/15/2024

This one feels so nice and juicy to me. Juicy is a weird way to describe a nocturne but I’m going with it. The spot is Shoreline Drive right across from Shoreline Park, which is officially my new favorite spot for nocturne painting.
Number 16 of 200 for 2024.
