Veteran's Day 2023
On this Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the courageous people who have selflessly served our nation. Let us not only remember their sacrifices today but also extend our gratitude and support year-round. Many veterans face unique challenges as they transition to civilian life, and it's our duty to ensure they receive the care, opportunities, and respect they deserve.
Spirit Day 2023
In support of anti-bullying of LGBTQ+ youth, Oct. 19 is observed as Spirit Day. Time to put on your favorite purple attire and show you stand against bullying, discrimination, and hatred towards LGBTQ+ youth.
In a world that can sometimes be unkind, let's be the change-makers, the allies, and the support system that every young person deserves!

Indigenous People's Day 2023
Throughout history, our society has previously observed the second Monday of October as Columbus Day. However, for the indigenous peoples that first inhabited America, this observance glorifies the violent oppression by European explorers who claimed their stake on the United States.
As time has passed, Columbus Day has been replaced with Indigenous Peoples' Day. Indigenous Peoples' Day is observed as a time to acknowledge the pain, trauma, and suffering that have been long overshadowed by Christopher Columbus; instead of glorifying history, we should continue focusing on the rich, diverse cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples and deepen our support for Indigenous communities, without resorting to stereotypes.
Bisexuality Visibility Day 2023
Marked each year since 1999, September 23 is observed as Bi Visibility Day, a day to raise awareness about bisexuality and challenge bisexual and biromantic erasure.
With only four percent of the population identifying as bisexual, these individuals are often considered the "invisible majority." As we observe Bisexuality Awareness Day, it's crucial to shed light on the unique challenges that bisexual individuals often encounter:
❌ Biphobia: Bisexual folks often confront prejudice and stereotypes from both the heterosexual and LGBTQ+ communities. It's crucial to recognize that bisexuality is a valid sexual orientation.
🤐 Invisibility: Bisexuality is often misunderstood or dismissed, leading to feelings of erasure. Everyone deserves to be seen and heard, regardless of their orientation.
💔 Relationship Stigma: Bisexual individuals may face judgment or skepticism in their relationships, with some assuming they are "confused" or "going through a phase." Love is love, no matter who it's with.
👁️ Hypersexuality Myths: Harmful myths about bisexuality being synonymous with promiscuity persist. Let's dispel these misconceptions and respect individual choices.
🚫 Mental Health Stress: The toll of concealing one's true self can cause mental health issues. It's vital to create safe spaces for open and honest discussions.

Women's Equality Day 2023
Today, on Women's Equality Day, we honor the fearless women who have paved the way for equality, not only across the globe, but here at Antioch University.
Whether it's in the classroom or in their everyday lives, these women continue to inspire the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.
When women rise, we all rise! Together, we can create a future where every woman's potential knows no bounds.

Disability Pride Month 2023
On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The ADA is a landmark civil rights law in the United States that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Since its enactment, the ADA has fostered greater inclusion, accessibility, and equal treatment across various domains, ultimately promoting a more inclusive society across the world -- something Antioch University continues to work towards and support.
In observance for this historical day, as well as Disability Pride Month, we want to bring awareness to the Disability Pride Flag, founded by Ann Magill, a disabled woman. The colors on the flag symbolize various disability experiences: physical disabilities; cognitive disabilities; nonvisible and undiagnosed disabilities; psychiatric disabilities; and sensory disabilities. The black background mourns disabled people who have died due to negligence, suicide, rebellion, illness, and eugenics.
How you can be an ally to those around you:
• Believe people, unconditionally, when they disclose a disability: Don’t accuse people of ‘faking’ their disabilities, their adaptations, their boundaries and their needs.
• Talk about disability with your children, and do so with a neutral stance (eg. They are a wheelchair user; not, ‘something awful must have happened’).
• Tread lightly and respectfully - Disability Pride Month can be an exhausting period for disabled people, whether or not they speak or advocate publicly.
• Explore the policies and practices of your workplaces, the accessibility of your physical location; and with considerations of ableism mentioned earlier in this blog, advocate for change.

Happy Birthday, Nelson Mandela!
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela
Happy birthday, Nelson Mandela! Today, we commemorate the extraordinary life and legacy of Mandela, a true champion of justice, peace, and equality.
Juneteenth 2023
"Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it with every generation." - Coretta Scott King
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is a significant celebration commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the end of slavery, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights and the resilience of the Black community.
World Environment Day: Beat Plastic Pollution!
World Environment Day is all about expressing gratitude for the nature that surrounds us, while also working to address the ongoing strife facing our ecosystem. This year's theme is #BeatPlasticPollution.
Global plastic consumption has increased in the last few decades. Without meaningful action, plastic waste flows into our aquatic ecosystems. If the path we're on continues, the numbers are expected to nearly triple from around 11 million tons in 2016 to around 29 million tons in 2040. Only 12 percent of this amount is properly recycled.
Do your part to reduce plastic by:
▪️ Avoid single-use plastics and invest in stainless steel straws or reusable portable plates.
▪️ Bring a tote bag to the grocery store to decrease your use of plastic bags.
▪️ Replace plastic Tupperware with glass or steel containers.
▪️ Avoid using products with microplastics, such as cosmetic items and synthetic clothing.
▪️ Organize your recyclables appropriately.
More resources and ideas on how to do your part to make a change can be found at https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/
Pride Will Always Be A Protest
According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, LGBTQ+ adults are more than twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition. Transgender individuals are nearly four times as likely as cisgender individuals individuals to experience a mental health condition.
Due to factors like race and economic status, the LGBTQ+ community often receives inadequate support for mental health.
There are currently over 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills at the state level, with 150 specifically targeting trans individuals and preventing access to age-appropriate, medically-necessary healthcare.
We must continue to move towards effective change and fight against the injustice facing the LGBTQ+ community. Use your voice to vote, contact your state legislators, and work with local groups supporting human rights.
May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia
May 17 is observed as the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB) as a way to mark the anniversary of the World Health Organization's declassification of homosexuality as a mental disorder back in 1990.
Millions of LGBTQ+ individuals around the globe are making tremendous progress in advancing their rights, however, in virtually every country, they still lack fundamental rights, face discrimination in their everyday lives, and deal with an epidemic of violence — both in the United States and across the world.
To achieve a world of equality, we must continue to fight against discrimination and work to obtain equal rights for all.

Earth Day 2023
Earth Day (and everyday!) is a time to dedicate our time, resources, and energy to combating climate change and environmental conservation. The Earth is more than a planet; it is our home. United together, we can make a change. While this sounds like an overwhelming task, every action, whether big or small, counts. By reducing our consumption of plastic, planting trees, using the power to vote, and shopping sustainably, we can move towards the mission of keeping our planet healthy and happy.
