🌺 Scoop a pad in the sand at Cowell Beach, sit a bit, and wait. In time, everything will come to you, and back from where it was. Santa Cruz is like that, a special, other-worldly place that honors the old, welcomes the new. In 1885 three princes, Kawananakoa, Keli’iahonui and Kalaniana’ole brought the long board and surfing. We trimmed it down, attached a leash, added a pivot, a thruster, a bonzer, a nubster, dressed it up, and did what three young men did a hundred years ago. Centuries earlier, almost two millennia, braver than brave, Kanaka Maoli, pushed off from the Marquesas and Raiatea for a place they had never been, were not sure existed, and did not know they would find. Hahai i nā manu. Aia ma ka ʻāina kahi e hele ai nā manu.” And they did. They followed the birds. Where birds go, there will be land. There was, more than two thousand miles distant. They came in wa’a, hewn from logs, balanced by ama secured by ‘iako, outrigger canoes with floats and struts. They brought their children, their pets, livestock, plants, medicinal remedies, and created a nation, Hawaiiki, named for the ancestral homeland of the Polynesians. There was a kid, John Smiley, puttering around on the beach at Kailua. His father taught him about the ancients, and how they built their outriggers, and then showed him. In time, John built his own, scooped not from a place to sit in the sand, but from a log to challenge the sea. Fifty years later, we asked John, “Will you build Santa Cruz an outrigger as the ancients did?” He smiled. An ancient smile. He did not speak. He simply nodded. Come to Makai.
