The hallmark of COVID-19 infections is with the amount of inflammation that can be produced during and after the infection. Some people build up more inflammation, which can lead to a more severe infection and sometimes prolonged symptoms such as with Long COVID. The inflammation is driven by immune cells which release substances called cytokines. These cytokines have multiple functions (some good, some bad) including:
*Mounting defenses against germs
*Repair of damaged tissue
*Programmed cell death
*Cancer development and progression but also cancer fighting
The class of medications aimed at manipulating these cytokines are called immunomodulators.
Too much inflammation is the hallmark of severe COVID-19 infections, and we believe that long COVID is likely a lower-grade persistence of that inflammation. The cytokines that appear implicated are: interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), interferon-gamma (IFN-𝛄), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-ɑ). Many of our current COVID-19 medications are aimed at manipulating these very cytokines.
Long COVID is marked by having any persistent symptoms of COVID for weeks or months after the infection has cleared. These symptoms may include:
*Fatigue and weakness
*Shortness of Breath or difficulty breathing
*Chest pain or tightness
*Heart palpitations or racing heartbeat
*Muscle/joint pain
*Headache
*Loss of smell/taste
*Difficulty sleeping/insomnia
*Brain fog/difficulty concentrating
depression/anxiety
*Digestive problems (nausea/vomiting/diarrhea)
*Skin rashes
*Hair loss
It is known that ketamine has anti inflammatory properties by blocking these very cytokines: IL-6, IL-1β, IFN-𝛄, and TNF-ɑ. It has shown promise in helping with some symptoms of long COVID such as shortness of breath, brain fog, and depression/anxiety. If you suffer from long COVID and would like to consider trying ketamine to help combat your symptoms, please reach out to us.
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is a form of therapy that combines the use of ketamine with psychological support to facilitate therapeutic breakthroughs.
Ketamine is thought to work on the brain’s glutamate system, leading to the release of certain neurotransmitters and promoting the growth of new neural connections. This neurochemical effect is believed to contribute to ketamine’s potential therapeutic benefits.
KAP has shown promise in the treatment of various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is often used when other treatments have been ineffective or when a more immediate response is needed.
It's important to note that ketamine-assisted psychotherapy should only be administered by trained professionals in a controlled setting. The dosage and administration are carefully monitored to ensure safety and effectiveness.
CruzMedMo works with local therapists to assist you with your mental health needs.
