Daisy Scott-Dover grew up with her seven brothers and one sister in a hogan in the Canyon Diablo area near Leupp, Arizona. She went to boarding school at age six. “I didn’t speak English, but my teacher would speak it. We would answer her in Navajo. Nobody knew what was being said to each other, but by about the end of first grade, I started to understand.”

In chapter 14 of "Voices of Navajo Mothers and Daughters," Mable discusses why Navajo traditions are so important to her and her family.

In 2008, our friend Kathy Ho**er and I talked about doing a collaboration on her next book, with me taking the photographs. Little did I know then that this would become a photographer’s dream project. From 2009 until 2012, my wife, Pam, and I made 12 trips to Flagstaff, Arizona, to photograph Navajo mothers and daughters. Now ten years later, I am extremely excited to announce that the book, "Voices of Navajo Mothers and Daughters: Portraits of Beauty," will be released in May. You can preorder the book starting on February 16 via the publisher, Soulstice Publishing.

In "Voices of Navajo Mothers and Daughters: Portraits of Beauty," Navajo great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, and daughters in twenty-one families tell their life stories. Through a series of intimate, revelatory personal histories, they open up about how they have been shaped by powerful cultural and historical forces—and by their love for each other. After hearing their stories, I had the opportunity to photograph each family in their familiar surroundings. These photographs add to the reader’s understanding of these strong, beautiful women and their lives.
