Are we there yet?!

Those of you who have visited will know that this beautiful pen and ink drawing, by my friend, Hugo Bastidas, perfectly depicts how private and secluded the back yard is. Here, the grassy lawn gently rolls down towards the fire pit and into the dense woods.

Weekend chilling at our friends’ natural swimming pool. Loving the foliage. Bliss.

A moment caught between showers of pouring rain. Slightly disappointed but know that we all need it especially after this week’s heatwave temperatures.

New Turkish pool towels, new note book, new life chapter, and I’m feeling good. We’ve reached today’s high of 93°, teenagers are larking about in the pool after a long bike ride. Then it’s lunch and kayaking where you can rent or charter boats. They also offer pontoon peddle boats, kayaks, canoes & paddleboard rentals and the marina is only a quick 15-minute drive away. There are lots of fun things to do right on our doorstep. Will share a page from our guidebook soon!

The backyard and pool area is secluded and surrounded by lawn and mature trees.Nobody’s watching. The hummingbirds, bumble bees, the cute brown rabbit living under the Bridalwreath spirea, and a few wandering deer are minding their own business.

Purple flowers are emerging and the magnificent irises are a sight to behold. Here’s your botany class 101 for the day. I’ve also added a couple of diagrams. You’re welcome.

In figure 1, the bright, upright petals lure the bumblebees. The sepal (falls) act as a landing pad and the veining directs the bees down into a tight space between the sepal and the style arm (figure2). The style arm is a highly modified pistil connecting the stigmatic lip to the o***y. While crawling down toward the nectar glands, pollen rubs off the back of the pollinator and attaches to the sticky stigmatic lip. As the bumblebees move forward, their backs come in contact with the pollen-producing anthers on the stamen where they pick up additional pollen.

Not upstate but in Brooklyn and am savoring some quiet time while hubby is away and son is at swim practice (for another hour). Wishing you all a peaceful evening.

First yard clean up of the spring season and it’s always a surprise how quickly the hunter-gatherer instincts click in. Pushing our wobbly wheelbarrow around the yard collecting fallen twigs, pine cones, snapping larger branches across my knees gives me such pleasure! Then engineering the perfect camp fire with perpendicular branches, stuffing the cavity with tinder and kindling. I could go on but shan’t bore you any further! Except to say, the best bit is to set it alight at dusk, gathered together with loved ones. Have a great weekend everyone!

Eggs Benedict, quiche of the day, huevos rancheros & a Denver omelet all enjoyed with a few mimosas, of course! Great food, friendly service, fabulous music, and only 15 minutes away by car. A great end to a great weekend.
