What an afternoon! So impressed with the seniors being trained to cross teach middle schoolers during a Beach High Elevate Savannah site visit! Many thanks to Executve Director Crystal Auguste and her team. (Certainly brought back memories of 1999 when I taught 9th grade English at Beach!)

As some of you know, my Dad was a lay pastor. That means he didn’t go to seminary and that he funded his calling through his businesses. (We had thrift stores in three mountain towns, and if it could be repaired, painted, and displayed, my Dad could sell it!)

When I was 9 or 10, our little congregation decided to build a church. Physically, I mean. Literally, build the church. But, they needed land.

The story of Laurie Costner, a childless widow who helped raise her nieces and nephew, has resonated with me for decades: Laurie gave the land!

She was an unexpected donor. Not a typical prospect. No one whose name would pop up in WealthEngine or on a major donor list.

That said, Laurie was joy-filled, passionate about the cause, and a beloved member of the church and community. She was already in the family, and she was aware of the need.

I reached out to her niece to make sure my memories were spot on, and she sent me this note: “Yes, she gave the land and was proud of it! She would say she gave her potato patch to build that church on!”

Today, the little brick church is open for weekly services. In fact, it hasn’t ever closed since Dad prayed the opening prayer back in the early 70’s.

For 22 years, I’ve worked with fundraisers across multiple sectors: When you position your “ask” within the framework of “if you give...this will happen,” you can fund a sustainable mission – once. To fund your mission forever, requires communication and story telling so that your donors know that their gift truly did make a difference.

Here are four quick ways to ensure your organization’s mission outlives you:

1. Say thank you often through story telling. (One of my favorite healthcare donors said this to me one day: “Tell me about someone’s life I’ve saved!”)
2. Make non-traditional giving easy: Open a brokerage account, and let your supporters know you accept appreciated stock. Set up reoccurring gifts. Reach the under-50 crowd with a PayPal or Venmo cash option.
3. Don’t spend it all today! Establish an endowment fund and highlight legacy giving in conversations with your supporters.
4. If you lead a faith-based organization, consider a focused, “Tithe Your Legacy” campaign. This targeted conversation can result in a planned approach to giving.
5. Maintain impeccable records. Always do what you say you’re going to do with the donations. Let your donors know. Ask again.
