Judge Patrick Moriarty
Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Patrick Moriarty is running for re-election to Position 17 in 2024.
A HUGE crowd was on hand yesterday to witness the official swearing in of the "new Sheriff in town" -- Sheriff Susanna Johnson. And Judge Moriarty was honored to be asked to administer her oath of office. Congratulations Sheriff Johnson!
Judge Moriarty has received so many terrific notes of congratulations on his Election Victory over the past week, but we thought we would share this one from IAM 751 which was the first of many Labor organizations to support his campaign. Thank you Machinists!
Late evening great news! We did it! Thanks to all of the great support throughout Snohomish County, Judge Moriarty WON the General Election tonight with 56% of the votes in his column vs. 43% for his challenger. And thanks to the dozens of supporters who showed up at Shawn O'Donnell's tonight to cheer for a great victory!
Voters have until 8:00 PM tonight to get their ballots in. Remember that EVERY VOTE COUNTS so if your ballot is still sitting on the kitchen counter, take a minute to mark Judge Moriarty's name and get it in the mail or a ballot drop box. The first batch of election results will be posted online tonight between 8:00 and 8:15. The endorsement from Prosecuting Attorney Jason Cummings published in the Herald yesterday speaks to the importance of appropriate balance in a judge's approach to justice:
"At the forefront of everybody’s mind these days is public safety. ..... Judge Moriarty appropriately balances individual rights with public safety. Please join me in voting to retain Judge Patrick Moriarty!"

The last weekend of knocking on doors! Thousands of doors and countless miles have gone into this important part of the Judge's effort to connect with voters. Please do your part by making sure everyone you know gets a ballot in the mail or into a ballot box by Tuesday.
With less than a week to go, you may be concerned that your ballot won't get through the mail in time. Well, it only needs to be postmarked by November 7, but there are lots of secure ballot drop boxes located throughout the county too. Check here to find one close to you: https://snohomishcountywa.gov/5726/Find-a-Ballot-Drop-Box
There is only one candidate on your ballot for Position 17 who has been endorsed by Labor. NINE Labor organizations representing the working families of Snohomish County have endorsed Judge Moriarty. Check it out before you vote: https://judgepatrickmoriarty.org/endorsements/
Thank you to Lynnwood City Council Vice Chair Julietta Altamirano-Crosby for inviting Judges Moriarty and Bouffiou (Lynnwood Municipal Court) to celebrate Dia de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) with her at the Lynnwood Convention Center yesterday. This traditional event – locally sponsored by the WAGRO Foundation – is a way to honor the lives of departed family members.
Mexico’s Deputy Consul helped open the celebration which featured a Catrina contest. La Catrina represents the choice Mexican people make to honor the lives of those they’ve lost rather than focusing on just their loss. One of the Catrina contestants is in this photo with the judges, the Deputy Consul, and Julietta.

Bi-partisan endorsements went out to Snohomish County voters last week from two of our respected elected officials – Councilmembers Megan Dunn (D) and Sam Low (R). Read their personal recommendations for RETAINING JUDGE PATRICK MORIARTY:
“Judge Moriarty has earned my heartfelt trust and endorsement. His 30 year career has been centered in Snohomish County and in service to the people who live and work here. Many of our families and community members are facing complex challenges so we need experienced judges who have earned the respect of the judicial and legal communities, elected leaders, Labor, and Law Enforcement. Judge Moriarty is the only candidate in this race who has ALL of that. As a local elected and progressive leader, I strongly urge you join me in voting to RETAIN the incumbent Judge Patrick Moriarty when you get your ballot.”
Megan Dunn
“Judge Moriarty is solid. We need to retain him on our Superior Court bench. His decades of judicial service, his commitment to public safety, and the respect he has earned from those who work in our courts make this election a clear choice. Vote Moriarty!”
Sam Low
All Snohomish County voters should have received a ballot in the mail by today. If you have not, call 425-388-3444 or email: [email protected]. Every vote counts !!!
Always nice when we see things like this pop up from voters Judge Moriarty has met while campaigning.....
As Judge Moriarty has been out knocking on doors and listening to voters for many months, the most common concerns expressed are about public safety – drugs, crime, and the effects on our communities. Read what our Prosecuting Attorney Jason Cummings had to say about the importance of RETAINING JUDGE MORIARTY in his Letter to the Editor published last week:
“At the forefront of everybody’s mind these days is public safety. There is a reason why Judge Moriarty has the overwhelming support of the deputy prosecuting attorneys in my office, law enforcement, and me. It is because Judge Moriarty appropriately balances individual rights with public safety. Please join me in voting to retain Judge Patrick Moriarty!”

Our thanks to Sam Low, who represents the 39th Legislative District in the House of Representatives AND serves as a Snohomish County Councilmember. He posted his strong recommendation for Judge Moriarty on his own FB page:
"Do your homework. Judge Moriarty is the candidate supported by law enforcement!!! He is the judge supported by every single Superior Court judge in Snohomish County. There are good reasons why our local law enforcement groups and our local judges support Judge Moriarty."
In case you missed it, below is an opinion piece that appeared in the Everett Herald last week:
"This November, you will have the opportunity to vote to retain Judge Patrick Moriarty, Snohomish County Superior Court, Pos. 17. Judge Moriarty is endorsed by every sitting judge in the Superior, District and Municipal Courts in Snohomish County. The judges listed below urge you to cast your vote to keep this hard-working, experienced, smart, and fair judge on our bench.
Judge Moriarty has years of judicial experience, as both a Superior Court Judge and Superior Court Commissioner. His judicial experience follows years of experience as an attorney where he practiced in all areas of the law that routinely come before the court: criminal defense, prosecution, family, juvenile, civil, and dependency. The work we do as judges is complex, varied, and exceedingly consequential; both to the individuals who come before us as well as the community.
It is clear to us that Judge Moriarty’s decades of experience both inform and enhance his ability to meet the unique demands of our work.
Judge Moriarty is the epitome of a knowledgeable, experienced, thoughtful and conscientious judge; the kind of judge we need to keep on our Superior Court bench. The extent and breadth of his community endorsements speak volumes about how seriously he takes his responsibility to treat everyone who appears before him fairly and impartially. Over 200 lawyers who practice in our court have endorsed him for election. We cannot afford to lose this important, hard-working, member of our court. Vote to retain Judge Moriarty in November."
Judges Anita Farris, Bruce Weiss, George Appel, Joseph Wilson, Marybeth Dingledy, Richard Okrent, Cindy Larsen, Jennifer Langbehn, Paul Thompson, Edirin Okoloko, Karen Moore and Jon Scott

Ballots will begin arriving in Snohomish County mailboxes TODAY, so make sure all your neighbors and friends know why you're voting to RETAIN JUDGE PATRICK MORIARTY ! Have you let them know ???
A big Editorial Board endorsement today for Judge Moriarty! The Everett Herald announced its picks for the two judicial races on the ballot, and Judge Moriarty got the nod to RETAIN his position on the bench.
Acknowledging his "impressive resume as an attorney with a range of knowledge, long experience as a pro tem judge and now backed by five years as a court commissioner and Superior Court judge," the Herald's Editorial Board said Judge Moriarty "has proved his fitness as a well-regarded and trusted jurist and should be confirmed to that post by voters."
Tribal sovereignty is one of the most critical issues facing the Indigenous Peoples of North America. As recognized by the courts, tribal sovereignty is the inherent right of Native American Indian Nations to govern themselves, make their own laws, and be self-determining. This includes jurisdiction over persons, property, territory, and economic and social welfare affairs. We are fortunate to have the sovereign nation of the Tulalip with its 5,100 members as part of our Snohomish County community. Judge Moriarty is proud to have received the endorsement of the Tribe and looks forward to working with the Tribal Council as an important community partner. Thank you for the support in this election!
Sen. Patty Kuderer (48th LD), a trial lawyer who knows the qualities and experience that make a good judge, has endorsed Judge Moriarty. Sen. Kuderer is a member of the Senate Law & Justice Committee and an announced candidate for State Insurance Commissioner in 2024.
Julieta Altamirano-Crosby, Ph.D. added her name to Judge Moriarty’s endorsement list last week. Dr. Altamirano-Crosby is the Vice President of the Lynnwood City Council and has over a decade of non-profit and community organizing experience. She is the co-founder of the WAGRO Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) whose primary focus is to provide resources to people or groups who belong to marginalized and underserved communities. She is also a member of the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs.
As they did in the August Primary election, FUSE has again recommended Judge Moriarty in the Progressive Voters Guide which just went online this morning.
In their strong recommendation, the Guide says that Judge Moriarty "has earned an impressive roster of progressive endorsements from community organizations, labor groups, local Democrats, and elected officials. Moriarty has also been endorsed by every sitting judge at all levels in Snohomish County. Moriarty has the most judicial experience in this race and has earned the broadest set of endorsements. We recommend Judge Patrick Moriarty to retain Position 17 on the Snohomish County Superior Court."

VOTE MORIARTY !
Glad to add Stephanie Vignal to our list of civically engaged elected officials to the Judge's endorsements! Now Mayor Pro Tem of the Mill Creek City Council, Stephanie previously served on the City's Parks & Recreation Board. Thanks for the support Councilmember Vignal !
The Labor Champions Dinner last night ! Judge Moriarty was joined by fellow judges Paul Thompson, Karen Moore, and Edirin Okoloko (missing from picture).
Our thanks to Snohomish City Councilmember (and former Mayor) Karen Guzak and her husband Warner Blake for hosting a wonderful event for Judge Moriarty on Saturday night. Along with co-hosts Robin McGee, Todd Nichols (Past President of WSAJ) and his wife Christine, we enjoyed great company and the beautiful restored church in Snohomish which is now Karen & Blake's home.
Saturday was our FIFTH parade of the campaign season, and Granite Falls did not disappoint. We were blessed with a beautiful fall day and many new members of our parade contingent, including Presiding Judge Jennifer Rancourt and Judge Rachelle Francis (standing with Judge Moriarty behind the banner). And we even picked up Judges Beth Fraser and Jeffrey Goodwin along the way. Thanks to all the District Court judges for supporting Judge Moriarty.
Every campaign seems to get its share of stolen and destroyed campaign signs. And sometimes graffiti artists use them for strange and disturbing “messages.” This practice seems to be escalating, however. Retired Judge Tom Wynne – otherwise known as “our sign guy” – has been driving around the county nearly every day, repairing and replacing Judge Moriarty’s signs. He reports that between 300 and 400 of our signs have either been damaged, stolen, or had “messages” spray painted on them! That’s a big number (and cost)! But we’ve chosen not to dwell on this annoyance and have gone to work with a little “Irish green” paint and voila` – they’re good as new and ready to go to work for us again. Here’s some before and after pictures. (We’ll spare you the truly disgusting graffiti messages.)
Thanks to the Edmonds chapter of AAUW (American Association of University Women) for hosting a "meet the candidates" event today at the Edmonds City Park. More than 20 Snohomish County candidates participated.
