🔥 Project Off-track? You’re Not Alone! 🤗
Let’s face it: Not all projects run smoothly 😕 we can only wish! Technical issues, new regulations, tough deadlines, resistant stakeholders, cost overruns, etc. are all common problems that every Project Manager has faced in one project or another; You are not alone!
However, since your job description consists of leading your project to success regardless of the obstacles it might encounter, you have to find the best way to navigate and deal with every arising hurdle.
If you are a senior PM, you probably developed a skill to cope with these problems by now 💥 You learned to keep calm and try to find out ways to get things on track again.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But, what if the problems your project is facing are increasing or getting more advanced to the point that they can jeopardize the whole project? And if we’re talking about mega projects costing billions of dollars, we can only imagine how stressful it can be for the project manager 🥵
So, what’s the best way to deal with such cases?
RULE #1 Deal with the issue as early as possible ⏳
You definitely don’t want to deal with the snowball effect; ignoring an issue of small significance can lead it to build upon itself, become larger, more dangerous, and way more difficult to resolve. You should tackle the problem in its early stages so you won’t lose control over it!
RULE #2 Involve your team 🤝
Sorry to break it to you, but being a PM doesn’t mean you’re a know-it-all superhero. Gathering your project team for a brainstorming session and getting their feedback will only contribute to tackling the issue in a more efficient way.
RULE #3 Keep monitoring the issue 🧐
Keep in mind that some issues are like an earthquake; the main shock can hide a series of aftershocks that you didn’t expect! Therefore you should be careful; Keep monitoring the issue status after implementing corrective actions to ensure that the root cause was successfully addressed.
💡 PMP Tip of the Week
Many PMP questions address issues. Remember that issues are unexpected negative events that have already taken place. Most of the questions specifically inquire about the PM’s response to a given issue. The right answer usually involves these practices:
✔ Gather information to better understand the situation.
✔ Refer to the contract or any related document.
✔ Collaboration, collaboration, and more collaboration!
✔ Delegate the decision-making if it exceeds the PM’s authority.
❌ Don’t break rules or regulations, don’t ignore the situation, and most certainly don’t escalate issues that are within your power! e.g. conflicts within the team
