Happy 100th Anniversary!
On July 7, 1917, the Hiram Chittenden Locks officially opening marking the completion of a Federal government project to connect Lake Washington and the Puget Sound by way of Lake Union.
Built and still operated by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Government Locks are heavily documented in the holdings of the National Archives in Seattle. Many of the photos, drawings, and other records about the design, construction and operation of this technological marvel have not been digitized and must be viewed in our search room.
Interested? Email our staff at [email protected] with your question. We'd love to share what we're saving for you.
Meanwhile here are just a few of the photos that can be found on line. Now, about the time the Navy barged an airplane through the Locks. . .

Daylight Savings Time has been discussed, used, amended and abandoned off and on throughout U.S. history starting about the time of the First World War. At times it was used in some locations across the country and not in others, sometimes even to the local level. Since 1974, following the Energy Crisis, most states have used daylight savings time during the summer months and reverted to standard time during the winter. States and territories still not using Daylight Savings today are most of Arizona, and all of Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The documents included in this group are not from NARA Seattle, but ARE in the National Archives Online Catalog: * https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6011733 * https://catalog.archives.gov/id/1668702 (2 Pages) * https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6860503

National Aviation Day (August 19th). Aviation was an important factor during World War I and the National Archives has records! Contributions were made from many federal agencies, including the Army Air Forces – Spruce Production Division (Record Group 18), who provided lumber for the growing demand for airplanes; the Bureau of Aeronautics (Record Group 72) who kept records on their associations with private corporations, like the Boeing Aircraft Company; and many other federal agencies, including the War Department General and Special Staffs (Record Group 165) and the Chief Signal Officer (Record Group 111). The following photos include (From [email protected]) 1. Placing fabricated under-body planking on hull (Boeing Corporation) https://catalog.archives.gov/id/298554 2.
