Jeff Harrell is a pharmacy legend. It was my honor to nominate him for the Bowl of Hygeia last year to honor him for all his work in the community. As of this morning he is the President of the National Community Pharmacists Association.

This year we've lost over 2000 pharmacies with the number one cited reason being reimbursement levels inconsistent with running a business. People are getting hurt as access becomes more difficult. The work will be cut out for Jeff. Thankfully there might be no one better equipped to lead during such a challenging time.

It is an honor working with him every day. And I'm thankful for all he does for our 70 employees and thousands of patients. Congratulations Jeff, I know you're going to do great things this year and be able to look back on your term proudly.

Happy Pharmacy Technician Day! Bob Johnson's has an excellent group of Technicians who make sure your insurance works, your meds get to you, your compounds get made, and that we are communicating through out.

Fridays are walk-in vaccine days! While we are always taking appointments, we know life doesn't always work that way and are happy to offer Friday Walk-ins this season.

It's Student Pharmacist Day! Bob Johnsons Pharmacy is proud to have had hundreds of students come through these doors on their way to their pharmacist job. From Bob Johnson himself to his student pharmacist-turned-owner Mike Donohue to Jessi today, Bobs pharmacists have always acknowledged our role in precepting the future to pay it forward to future generations. Please join us in saying welcome and congrats to pharmacist Liz Sullivan! Many of you may recognize her as someone who has been working at Bob Johnson's for years. Hired as a student intern by Mike Donohue, Liz immediately made an impact with our staff.

Shortly after I took over as the new owner, the team told me they really hoped that we'd hire Liz on as a permanent team member once she got her doctorate of pharmacy degree. Liz knows our patients well, and is an organized person who has thrived in our retail, LTC and compounding departments. We are very excited to see what she brings to the team!

"We are proud to report that our store owner, Matt Binder, has been recognized by the state pharmacy association as the young pharmacist of the year. This award recognizes an exceptional pharmacist who has graduated within the last ten years.

Matt first discovered independent pharmacy when he interned under Betsy Faulkner at Woodinville Medical Center Pharmacy. Matt has since been with Ostroms since he was licensed in 2017, learning what it means to serve the local community and maintain a pharmacy with an incredible reputation for caring about its customers. Following the previous owner's retirement, Matt bought the store with partner Jeff Harrell, himself just recognized in 2023 for his own community service. Despite the perceived great risk in store ownership, Matt stated that he wanted to make sure Ostroms could continue to be one of the best pharmacies in the country and didn't want to risk someone else buying it and ruining such a great thing.

The Donohue family, who had ran Bob Johnson's Pharmacy from 1988 until 2022, had previously been in talks with Jeff Harrell to sell before their retirement. With Mike's untimely passing, Matt and Jeff partnered again to take over the beloved business with the same goals as Ostroms: keep the charm that made this small business so beloved by the community. With that in mind, Bob's still has the same staff that it had on the day of sale in 2022 - and has only added numerous friendly faces to keep up with growth. During challenging industry times, Bob's has doubled in size - anchored by manager Jessi, Mike's son and lead technician Ben Donohue, and a team that has an obvious family atmosphere.

Madison Park Pharmacy was opened following the bankruptcy of Medley Pharmacy left a hole in the beautiful Madison Park neighborhood of Seattle. Despite a back drop of Washington State losing 10% of its community pharmacies in just over a year, the return of a pharmacy in Madison Park that hired on most of the staff at the previous store was a boon to the neighborhood.

In 2023, Ostroms Drug and Bob Johnson's Pharmacy were recognized in a poll by the Seattle Times as top 3 pharmacies in the Pacific Northwest. Besides maintaining these three stores, Matt's favorite professional activities have been precepting students and advocating for the profession. To these ends he's been recognized by UW and WSU as a preceptor of merit as well as been named to the National Community Pharmacy Association's Committee on Legislative Affairs. Matt has always believed there is more opportunity in improving the world by giving context and motivation to future generations than by wearing blinders and only focusing on the present.

Matt's proudest personal professional moment was seeing the first student receive the Ostroms-Wolfgang Endowed Scholarship at Cascadia College in Bothell; a scholarship established with Jeff Harrell and named after their store as well as Matt's departed father.

We are thrilled to relay the news that our student, Anna Dimak, has received the Washington State Pharmacy Association’s Student of the Year award.

Anna recently completed 3 months working with Ostroms Drug and Bob Johnson’s Pharmacy as a rotational student before accepting a paid position to continue on during her time in school. Her hard work and friendly attitude convinced us to take further students working on multi-site rotations as well as starting a residency program that we hope will benefit future pharmacists and our stores for years to come.

She has identified advocacy as a passion – she notably traveled to Washington, DC with Matt and Jeff to meet with federal legislators to discuss some of the issues facing our industry – an industry that has lost nearly 100 pharmacies just since 2023. She has also organized multiple trips for the University of Washington to Olympia to discuss pharmacy with our state representatives.

She said her favorite moment on rotations was giving a man a vaccine that led to laughs – she told him she chose pharmacy to attack people and play with stickers. She says this moment brings a smile to her any time of day.

We are so proud to have the state pharmacy student of the year on our team, congrats Anna!

A huge congrats to the newly minted Dr. Liz Sullivan! Liz has been at Bobs for 3 years and was originally hired by Mike Donohue. She has officially passed all UW requirements and has earned her doctorate. We are so proud of her!

Today Brandon, Anna and Joanne of Bobs and Ostroms represented independent pharmacy at the Washington State Pharmacy Association event at Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center.

Increasing youth interest in pharmacy has been a major goal of ours and we are thankful to WSPA and Sno Isle for inviting us.
