Committee for Children, Seattle, WA Videos

Videos by Committee for Children in Seattle. CFC has fostered the safety and well-being of children via social-emotional learning since 1979.

Now that we’ve entered into another school year, let’s remember that teaching social-emotional skills goes beyond academics.

Learning life skills not only prepares students for success in the classroom but also helps students make responsible decisions, manage strong emotions, and solve problems effectively throughout their lives.

When we focus on life skill-building:

🔹 Students become more engaged and ready to learn

🔹 Classrooms can become more positive and productive

🔹 Students are more likely to reach academic milestones

Research shows that research-based life skill-building in the classroom leads to improved attitudes, more positive relationships, and fewer behavioral challenges (Source: bit.ly/4cKKSPD).

Kids can pick up social-emotional skills from the adults around them, but they can also be taught directly in the classroom! Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ The teacher explains the concept with words, pictures, videos, or audio. 2️⃣ Students practice through activities, discussions, writing, or partner work. 3️⃣ The teacher reinforces the concept all week long. 4️⃣ Info is sent home for practice with parents. 5️⃣ The teacher checks for understanding and reteaches if needed. The impact of SEL is increasingly recognized around the world to positively affect individuals and communities. 😃 Life skills like emotion management, problem-solving, making responsible decisions, self-regulation skills, and maintaining healthy relationships help to create a well-functioning, compassionate society. Similar to emotional intelligence (a concept used outside of school settings), these skills enable people to adapt, be resourceful, and work well with others, and they’re all taught in SEL programs. Well-implemented SEL programs positively affect students’ success in school. Studies show that social-emotional skills—such as problem-solving, self-regulation, impulse control, and empathy—help improve academics, reduce negative social behaviors like bullying, and create positive classroom climates (Source: bit.ly/4aG2D1d). Social-emotional skills can also help kids manage everyday life. They help students focus, make good decisions, and become supportive members of their community well beyond school. 🙌 Learn more: https://www.cfchildren.org/what-is-social-emotional-learning/schools/
