It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of long time friend, and patron George Bernard Curts, beloved man and pillar of Seattle and the Eastlake community,
George passed away peacefully on January 17, 2024, surrounded by his closest friends in Seattle, Washington.
We met George in 1994, 2 years after we bought the 14 Carrot Cafe. It wasn’t long after that George became our family. He has been coming here twice a day every day since, befriending the entire staff here.
Born in Portland, Oregon on November 12, 1934, raised by parents Donald and Emma Curts. George led a life as colorful and vibrant as the vintage books, coins, and pop culture relics he so cherished. George was a proud veteran of the Coast Guard, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was a beacon of kindness and goodwill, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. His love for his Eastlake community and his philanthropic spirit touched the lives of many. After serving in the Coast Guard, George proudly called Seattle home. It was the 1960s, a perfect era to complement George's impeccable taste and flair for drama and art and an enfity for Greek culture and folk dancing. All these were matched only by his quick wit, infectious smile, and sense of humor. His passion for life, was only surpassed by the warmth and care he showed to all who knew him. George was a private man and somewhat of a mystery at times; much similar to his favorite authors who went under the pseudonym Franklin W. Dixon the writers of the infamous Hardy Boys series. 🙂
In addition to his many endeavors, George remained a devoted supporter of his High School alma mater and Christ, embodying the true spirit of giving back.
George will be dearly missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. As we mourn the loss of George, we also celebrate the joy and laughter he brought into our lives.
Rest in peace, George, we love you, your table is always ready and your coffee will always be poured. May your spirit continue to shine brightly in the lives of those you touched.
A celebration of life will be held at the 14 Carrot Cafe March 13 th from 3pm - 7pm

Our Story
The Hines Public Market Building has been hosting businesses for almost a hundred years. It’s been and eastlake fixture since 1923. The 14 Carrot Cafe opened its doors in 1977 by Julia Miller then sold to Terry Proios in 1992, The Proios Family Terry, Elizabeth and Paul Proios have been running it for 28 years now. Tony Proios husband and father passed away in 1982 from Lung Cancer. When we found the cafe we were drawn to the name 14 Carrot Cafe as juicing carrots reminded us of our father. Juicing carrots was standard care for lung cancer patients in the 80s. We juiced a lot of carrots, so it was symbolic for us.
We are home to the Carrot Cake pancake, a family recipe that son Paul has modified into a famous dish here. Carrot Cake and fresh Carrot Juice from our press are staples here also, along with huge gooey cinnamon rolls and big omelettes. Our breakfasts are generously portioned. Tahini Toast, Greek Yogurt, Terry’s Greek Delight Omelette, we have it all. The party drinks are orange rosemary pomegranate mimosa carafes, garnished with seasonal fruit and Sake Bloody Mary’s or Red Eyes garnished with honey cured bacon.
We have big crowds on the weekends who wait in line outside under the heat lamps. We’ve served so many people over the years from all walks of life, celebrities, public officials, many people have had their first dates here, have been engaged here, married here and even divorced here. We’ve been cracking eggs since 1977 and will continue to serve the Seattle area for years to come.
