Currently in Iceland and heading to Norway in a couple of days. This had me thinking back to our last trip and how much I loved taking photos of the landscapes there.

All photographed on Portra 400 & 800 on a Leica M6, Contax T2, and Hasselblad 500cm. Fun fact, this first image is one of the examples of Portra 800 on the Kodak website.

If you’re a photographer, what do you think this was taken on? Film? Digital? Leica? Hasselblad? A $2000 camera? A $4000+ camera?
-
Turns out this was taken with the original Canon 5D, a camera that I’ve seen offered for under $200 lately, even on reputable third party sites. Not bad for a camera that came out in 2005!
-
So while I absolutely love using the latest and greatest technologies, it’s a good reminder that photos that I really love don’t always need all of that amazing stuff. It’s helpful, sure, but when I originally got this camera in 2007 it was MIND-BLOWINGLY good and took my work to a whole new level. I made an entire video on my YouTube channel talking about this camera if you want to check it out :)
-
Another fun side note is that my sister-in-law took this photo at the first wedding that she tagged along with me on. Also hi, !

Some post-vows photos in front of Mount Rainier (Tahoma). When the “mountain is out” everyone around here is a little happier.

Seeing the Mona Lisa always seems to have an impact on me, but not really for the reasons you’d expect. Sure, it’s a brilliant painting, but the fact that such a small work of art that is surrounded by MASSIVE installations can captivate the attention of humanity for hundreds of years the way that it has. It also makes me think more of the longevity of my own work and how silly it is to think I can post thousands of photos of this platform and expect thousands of people to like it (and if they don’t, like it’s a failure). What about you?

A reminder that the latest/greatest gear can be incredibly helpful, but you can make beautiful photographs with a TON of affordable cameras. This photo was made in 2012 with the original X100 that came out in 2011. Heck, the absolute GOAT of cameras in the original Canon 5D that I see all day online for under $200.
-
I’m not saying that new gear isn’t incredibly helpful, more just a reminder that there are plenty of affordable options out there to go and make photos with.

I don’t always take photos of a wedding dress, but I *do* always ask if it’s something a client wants. Do you?

This is the 500cm, a legacy film camera I’ve used for years with the new CFV100C digital back. It lets me switch between film and digital on the same camera body, giving me that same experience of taking photos through the beautiful waist-level viewfinder as well.
-
I made a full video using this on both film & digital on my YT.

One of the best parts of having been in the same field since 2007 (!!!!) is finding gems like this back in 2013.

I remember wanting to get this photo but it was impossible to Eric & Sabriah with the night sky together like I wanted. So we took some frames of them and then I set my camera down facing straight up and took a longer exposure of the night sky for a little double exposure action. Fun bit of nostalgia and remember how excited I was to have fun being creative with photography.

One of my absolute favorite things about destination weddings and elopements is being able to spend a day before or after exploring the scenery on my own, usually with my trusty Hasselblad 500cm. Nothing feels quite like looking through that viewfinder, hearing the slap of the mirror, and winding the film to advance to the next frame. It slows me down and instead of taking 3-5 photos, I wait and take just one.

Some frame grabs from a wedding highlight video I put together while photographing. I gave myself a bit of a personal challenge to make something and am pretty happy with how they all turned out.

It’s funny how I brought a Leica and a Hasselblad but the iPhone photo from this spot was my favorite. You always don’t *need* amazing/expensive gear to take a good photo, but often it helps :)
