This was a recent commission that just got installed. The homeowners expanded their house and this was an exterior window for a bathroom that became an interior window. They wanted a fun artistic solution for privacy and natural light.

Keeping the Flame
4'x1'x6"

I like using common objects to express feelings and stories.
With this MAPP gas torch I'm expressing my feelings of continuously trying to put forth energy into the universe, of striving to make a mark and be relevant in the world.

Our struggles, raging against the dying of the light. of heat death. of entropy. of blandness. A spark and fuel to maintain the flames.

Why the light bulb, Sean?

I've been drawn to lightbulbs and sources of light as far back as I can remember. As a symbol in the language of my work, It goes back to when, after college, I was a set painter at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. Doing touch ups on the set I was often one of or the only person in the theater, and before leaving I'd set the "Ghost Light" out on the stage. Pragmatically the ghost light is a solitary, movable light that allows someone to see the edge of often changing stages so they don't fall off. But, as everyone knows, every theatre worth its salt is haunted and the ghost lights keep the ghosts company or to chase away mischievous spirits. I always loved the notion of this beacon for a thing that may or may not exist.

I like to keep the image alive in my work as a reminder of my own past, a collective past of all theatre workers, but also as reminder to put goodness and positive energy into the world, even if no one, or no ghost sees it. I think of my own versions of ghost lights as amulets, as protections against negative energies, as a call to those seeking safe harbor. They hold such layered meanings for me, but I think of lightbulbs in my work to reference the self, the soul, and the infinite energy of creation.
For me these images become sacred.

"Locally Sourced" an exhibit at AMcE Creative Arts in Seattle closes today.
I have a grid of pieces from "the Proof of my Love" series, images of cassette tapes cast in glass, painted and framed. I love the notion of heartfelt connections to objects, both of the present and those laced with nostalgia. I think of technology and the messages and metaphors inherent in new approaches to communication throughout time. I think of the time and dedication many of us put into making Mix Tapes to share with friends and romantic interests. How vitally important each song, and the order that they were recorded was to our expression. I think of objects that themselves become decorations and I think of the longevity and placement of high regard in being made in glass. ethereal, but visceral.

The Exhibit includes the work of:
