🚨 National Slow Down Move Over Day – October 19, 2024 🚨
Did you know that failing to move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles is not only dangerous—it’s against the law? 🚓🚒🚑
The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office is reminding everyone to protect those who protect you. On National Slow Down Move Over Day, we encourage all drivers to remember the importance of moving over and slowing down when you see flashing lights, emergency vehicles, or roadside workers.
Here’s how YOU can help: 🔹 Move over a lane if it’s safe to do so. 🔹 If you can’t move over, slow down significantly. 🔹 Stay alert, and never drive distracted.
Every year, first responders, law enforcement, tow truck drivers, and other roadside workers are injured or killed by drivers who fail to follow these basic safety rules. Let’s work together to keep everyone safe!
Remember, it's the law and it could save a life. Stay safe out there, Sheboygan County! 🚨
Deputy Grunewald was awarded the 2023 Hero Award from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) for his continued pursuit to end impaired driving. Thank you Deputy Grunewald for your continued commitment to safety and service to Sheboygan County.
Episode 7 is here! Koke and Lt. Blodgett talk with Beatriz from Partners for Community Development, Inc. There are a lot of great benefits they provide for the community including but definitely not limited too: HVAC, Plumbing, Insulation, even a down payment for a house!

Here are a few photos from the last couple of days. The community support has been tremendous. Our employees, citizens, and local businesses are phenomenal!
Special thanks to Sargento, Professional Supply, Old Wisconsin, Rockline Industries, Wal-Mart, and Kohler Company.
Full Media Release:
On occasion, we are asked if law enforcement is a tough profession. My general answer is yes, there are a lot of sacrifices that the men and women of our agency make for the betterment of the community. BUT it’s a lot easier when we have a supportive community that stands with us!
I recently put a challenge out to our staff asking if they would help contribute to an established supply drive that would benefit the community of Asheville and the Asheville Police Department. Our employees asked that it be shared on our page so it could be shared with their friends and family. The challenge was to raise enough to force me to rent a U-Haul to transport the supplies to De Pere. We quickly grew past that!
The community and business support are truly amazing.
• Sargento donated a truck, trailer, and driver to take the donations to Antigo where they will be transferred to Karl’s Trucking Company. The semi was full.
• Professional Supply donated their receiving area to load the semi along with donating half a trailer of supplies. They donated approximately 16 skids of cleaning supplies, gloves, hand sanitizer, sanitizing, and disinfectant wipes totaling over $60,000.
• Rockline Industries donated 2 pallets of disinfectant wipes, over 1,800 containers.
• Old Wisconsin donated 3 pallets of food totaling almost 3000 pounds of product.
• Wal-Mart on Vanguard Drive for their sizeable donation of water.
• Employees, friends, and family of the Sheriff’s Office donated countless pallets of requested supplies.
• Employees from the entire county pitched in from our Human Resources Department, Maintenance to the Highway Department.
• Kohler Company employees stopped by with several vehicles loaded with supplies.
• Members of the community stopped by in droves. Church groups, scouts, and general caring members of the community.
Supplies that were provided were bottled water/gallon jugs of water, Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, Diapers/Baby Wipes, Trash Bags, non-perishable snack items, blankets and towels, Toiletries, etc.
This started Tuesday evening with an email to our employees explaining that the Police Lights of Christmas was partnering with Karl’s Transportation to send supplies down to North Carolina. It was asked of them to donate what they could by Friday and we would transport the items to De Pere to support their mission and our fellow Americans. On Wednesday afternoon I was asked to put a message on Facebook so it could be shared with Friends and Family. Come Thursday morning the word was out and the community support was starting to trickle in. By early morning I was trying to find a U-Haul. By early afternoon one of our Sergeants was trying to find a semi!
In an economic time where budgets are tighter and margins are more narrow, our community members and businesses stretched themselves to help our fellow Americans in need. We will likely never meet the recipients of these donations, but it will make a lasting impact on them and their families.
So is this profession difficult, you bet! But these are the times that make me incredibly proud to live in and serve Sheboygan County, knowing at the end of the day, our community members will rise to the challenge and stand with us in helping our fellow citizens!
Thank you to all who made this event successful! This could not have been successful without the contributions of many. I am sorry if I missed anyone while making acknowledgments!
Sincerely,
Matt Spence, Sheriff

While creating a post for another event I noticed this post did not publish from my phone. Please congratulate Deputy Jeanty (albeit late) on his award. Deputy Jeanty was given this award at the Town of Sheboygan Fire Department's Tunnel to Tower's 5K memorial run on September 14.
~~~
Today Deputy Jeanty was a co-recipient of this year's Follow the Footsteps award.
Tunnels to Towers presents this award each year to a deserving public safety or military member who has put service to others above themselves.
Deputy Jeanty contributes to the betterment of Sheboygan County and the east-central region of Wisconsin in several ways. He volunteers his time in his community with the Fire Department, is a member of the Fire Investigation Team, Drone Team, and Negotiation Team, and teaches in some of his spare time. These are only a few ways that Deputy Jeanty contributes and gives back to the community.
As you can see, he is also preparing to run the 5K!
I became aware of Police Lights of Christmas and Karl’s Transportation teaming up to bring a haul of supplies to Asheville Police Department. Asheville, among many other communities, has been severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. I have asked our staff to see what resources they could offer to support our fellow Americans in their time of need. At the request of our staff I am making this request public.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office will accept non-perishable donations until 6:00 am Friday, October 4. At that time staff will begin loading the items for delivery to the transfer center in Green Bay so Karl’s Transportation can deliver the items to Asheville.
Some of the items in need are:
-Bottled water/gallon jugs of water
-Paper Towels
-Toilet Paper
-Diapers/Baby Wipes
-Trash Bags
-Non Perishable SNACK items
-NEW blankets and towels (no tag, no take)
-Toiletries
-Generators
If you are interested in donating please feel free to stop at the Sheriff’s Office and leave the donations with the Shift Commander. If you do not want to talk with anyone, there will be a drop-off location in the lobby.
If you cannot make it in by Friday morning but want to support those locally in need, please contact the Sheboygan County Food Bank at (920) 453-0169!
Thank you to our community for all your support!
Sheriff Spence
MEDIA RELEASE
Fatal Semi Vs. Train Accident; Town of Sherman
On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at approximately 2:08 pm, the Sheboygan County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call advising of a crash between a semi-truck with a tanker hauling liquid manure and a Wisconsin Southern train in the W5100 block of Abbott Drive, located in the Town of Sherman in the southwest portion of Sheboygan County.
As deputies arrived on the scene they discovered a semi-tank truck loaded with approximately 5,000 gallons of liquid manure had originally been operating west on Abbott Drive. The semi was on its side in the ditch as it had crossed the Wisconsin Southern Railway crossing with Abbott Drive and was struck by a northbound Wisconsin Southern train. The crossing has a yield sign on Abbott Drive.
The train’s engine and six cars were derailed out of approximately 22 cars. Only one car that was derailed lost some of its plastic pellet load. There is no hazard to the community.
The operator of the semi, a 66-year-old male from Kewaskum, was deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Abbott Drive will be closed westbound from State Highway 57 and traffic entering from the west on Abbott Drive will be required to turn south onto Allen Road until the investigation is complete, which could be several days, dependent on repairs.
The accident is being reconstructed by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Names and other details will not be released at this time pending notification of families.
Other public safety resources that assisted with this incident were; the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Sheboygan County Highway Department, Sheboygan County Hazmat Team, WI State Patrol, WI Department of Natural Resources, Orange Cross Ambulance, Fire Department's from Random Lake, Silver Creek and Plymouth.
The weather conditions are not great this morning, so please take extra time when traveling. Here are some tips to help keep you safe while traveling in foggy weather conditions:
-Slow Down: Reduce your speed to match the reduced visibility. Fog can make it hard to judge distances and see obstacles, so give yourself more time to react.
-Use Low Beam Headlights: High beams can reflect off the fog and create glare, making visibility worse. Use your low beams or fog lights if you have them.
-Increase Following Distance: Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. This gives you more time to react if the vehicle ahead suddenly stops.
-Use Fog Lights Wisely: If your car has fog lights, use them in addition to your low beams, but turn them off if visibility improves. Fog lights are designed to illuminate the road directly in front of you and reduce the amount of light that is reflected off the fog.
-Keep Your Windows Clear: Use your windshield wipers and defroster to keep your windshield clear. Foggy weather can cause condensation on the windows, further reducing visibility.
-Avoid Sudden Maneuvers: Smooth, gradual movements are key in foggy conditions. Abrupt turns or stops can be dangerous when visibility is compromised.
-Follow Road Markings: Use the lane markings on the road as a guide to stay in your lane. If you're not sure where you are on the road, focus on the road markings rather than trying to see too far ahead.
-Stay Alert: Fog can be tiring and disorienting. Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions. Take regular breaks if you're driving for extended periods.
-Avoid Passing: Avoid overtaking other vehicles in foggy conditions as it can be difficult to see oncoming traffic and judge the distance.
-Pull Over if Necessary: If the fog becomes too dense and you can’t see at all, pull over safely to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights, and wait until visibility improves.
We're looking forward to a safe and festive Independence Day but we need your help!
With increased community events there will be increased pedestrian traffic, including kids running around. Please reduce your speed, look around, be patient, and enjoy the day.
If you’re enjoying the many lakes of Sheboygan County please remember to check your equipment before leaving the dock, have enough life jackets for all the passengers, operate safely and courteously, and enjoy your time with friends and family.
We only hope to see you at the parade!
Now that boating season is in full swing, the Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit wanted to remind everyone to wear a life jacket when enjoying the beautiful waterways of Sheboygan County. State law requires US Coast Guard approved wearable life jackets to be either worn or easily accessible for each person while aboard a vessel. Tragically, the State of Wisconsin experienced 28 boating fatalities in 2023 where 27 of the 28 victims were not wearing life jackets.
Yesterday, the Sheboygan County Marine Patrol Unit partnered with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office, Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to conduct training on Lake Michigan. Training topics included overall boat handling, operation of sonar, and boat towing. Although we hope we're never needed, our Marine Unit is ready to respond to any type of emergency that may occur on the waters of Sheboygan County.
Last week, we shared photos of Lt. Blodgett graduating from the Wisconsin Command College, Class 10. Each class has a project and Class 10's project was to self-publish a book.
Guardians of the Midwest is filled with anecdotes and advice from each class member. All proceeds go to WI Law Enforcement Death Response Team. This book is available on Kindle or Paperback!
Guardians of the Midwest: Wisconsin Officers’ Journey Through the Ranks GUARDIANS OF THE MIDWEST: Wisconsin Officers’ Journey Through the Ranks is not just a collection of stories; it's a testament to the courage, dedication, and sacrifice that law enforcement officers make daily.
