This continues to be a very active summer for the northern lights. I want to say it was a calm and quiet night at the local pond. But it really wasn’t with all the flapping waterfowl, croaking frogs, and a splashing beaver. None of them I could see, but my ears always seem to pick up more when it’s pitch dark outside. The rare cool and windless weather caused fog to form on the water. Blame the beaver for disturbing an otherwise perfect reflection. All evening long the aurora was out. But I was waiting for the 80% full moon to set at 1:30AM for better viewing conditions. A glow was immediately apparent and growing brighter on the northern horizon. The color was undetectable but it soon broke out into pillars moving from right to left. Occasional meteors were flying between a steady stream of satellites. This week is the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. Unfortunately viewing conditions are not ideal this year. At its peak early Friday morning the inescapable moonlight will drown out all but the brightest of meteors. Still, it may be worth watching if you have clear skies.
