Perfectly said.

Have you ever experienced being around someone who made all your cares and worries melt away? Someone who’s observational skills, attention to detail, and calm but assertive demeanor gave you confidence and hope? Have you ever experienced a complete melting away of your fear because you knew this person saw you, your skills, your needs, and would never put you in a position you couldn’t handle? There is complete relaxation and trust, but also the desire to try harder than you’ve ever tried before- to be the best you can be, because you feel safe, inspired, and interested.

This is what a good leader does, and this is what we should strive to provide for our horses. A horse seeks mental balance far more than we do, because we easily get addicted to drama or troubles- a horse just wants to feel safe. If we do our part to work on ourselves, we can provide this feeling to every horse we meet.

We are actively seeking horses for consideration in our program!

We look forward to working with you! 🐎

After much consideration, we've decided to take Peaceful Haven Farm in a different direction. We are pleased to announce that beginning in October this year, we look forward to offering well rounded horses for sale, sound of mind and body, on a small scale basis (1-2 horses at a time, with the focus being upon matching horse and horseman to the best of our ability). The program will be centered upon Gaited Horses!

Each horse coming through our program will undergo thorough evaluation, receive foundational and ongoing training by Jill (based in the method outlined by horseman Chris Cox), with a focus on creating a confident and quiet trail partner, and then be offered through our program for sale.

The goal of the program is to match horses and horsemen based on each individual's requirements and needs, and assist in creating a lasting partnership. Each buyer will have the opportunity to receive instruction and guidance as well on their intended purchase horse, to ensure a smooth transition and set both horse and horseman up for success! The beauty of working with our small scale program is the time we are able to spend with each horse individually, and the ability to really focus on each individual's needs.

🐎 We look forward to creating a program that we hope will become one of the most trusted and reliable sources for finding the gaited horse of your dreams, in the Central PA area. We will occasionally offer non gaited horses for your consideration, as well as offer spaces for consignment horses that are in need of rehabilitation or training to come into the program. 🐎

Inquiries are welcome, whether you are looking to purchase your next trail partner, or have a horse you'd like to offer for sale. Send us a message, or contact via phone at (717)658-9696. Based in Shippensburg PA.

We will have one space available for a training/rehabilitation client horse, beginning in October. The space for September has been filled. If you're interested in more information, please send us a message, or contact 717-658-9696. Happy to provide references and schedule an evaluation/consult for training services.

Specializing in:
-Building confidence in horses and their humans, encouraging a solid partnership and building/rebuilding a foundation

-Working through challenges and specific issues horses and clients may be experiencing (trailer loading, lack of confidence under saddle and on the ground, troublesome for farrier/vet visits, etc)

-C**t Starting (limited basis), horsemanship based in the principles and methods outlined by horseman Chris Cox

We look forward to working with you and your horse!

This Thoroughbred gelding, who has been with us since February following a medical diagnosis of kissing spine, has done very well in rehabilitation at PHF. Through implementation of ground work principles at the appropriate pace, therapeutic exercises, laser therapy, and finally gradual re- introduction to ridden work, he has shown marked improvement in all aspects! A focus on creating a partnership between horse and horseman with balance, softness, and quiet confidence is the cornerstone of our program.

We will have space available in October to accept a training or rehabilitation (dependent upon the case) client horse. If you'd like additional information, send us a message, or contact 717-658-9696.

Beginning in May, Jillian is opening up her schedule to accept new horsemanship clients on a limited basis. These spaces are designated with clients in mind who are having trouble with their horses, on the ground and in the saddle, and focus on identifying the root cause and addressing the issue. Jillian's years of experience allow her to share what she has learned over time and careful study/mentorship with you and your horse. Specializing in difficult cases, offering an understanding, patient, and empathetic approach to working with horse and human alike.

You may trailer in to our facility in Shippensburg PA, and if that is not an option for you, travel lessons are offered on a case by case basis. Pricing begins at $75/hour and mileage charges apply.

❄️WINTER WATER TEMPERATURE & IMPACTION COLIC ❄️

While there are several different types of colic, impaction colic is the type most often seen during winter months. Decreased water consumption is assessed to be the number one factor contributing to impaction colic. In simple terms, impaction colic is caused by a blockage that forms in the large colon, cecum, or small intestines due to a feed material obstruction.

Sufficient daily intake of water is a crucial component for healthy gastrointestinal motility of the large colon in the horse. The average 1,000-pound horse requires approximately 5 – 7 gallons of water per day and in a 24-hour period, the horse’s colon and cecum secrete and reabsorb roughly 30 gallons of fluids.

It is a common belief that horses drink less water as the temperature of drinking water approaches freezing and that they will drink more if the water provided is warmer. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine conducted a study to determine the horse’s preferences for water during cold temperatures.

The study revealed that horses drank 40% more water when the water was heated (average 60Β°F) but ONLY if heated water was the only available water source. If cold water (approximately 32Β°F) was available, horses drank almost exclusively from the cold water and drank less volume than if they had only warm water available. Researchers also observed that all horses in the study consumed 82% of their daily water intake within three hours of feeding, regardless of whether they were stalled or in pastures during feeding times. Additionally, the study found no preference or increase in water consumption between heated water buckets or heated stock tanks.

For optimal water consumption during cold weather and to decrease the likelihood of impaction colic, provide horses with warm water (~60Β°F) and prevent access to cold water. Additionally, if you use buckets it is important to refill them at (or just after) feeding to ensure a maximum amount of water is available to the horse in the three hours immediately after feeding.

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news that our beloved Standardbred gelding, Rooster, was laid to rest yesterday. Rooster was an incredible horse who touched the lives of so many, and he will be sorely missed. He was the reason Peaceful Haven Farm was founded. Please keep our barn family in your thoughts as we all grieve the loss of our beautiful friend. πŸ’”

Well stated!

Our Number 1 job, as riders/as trainers, is to build the horse's confidence as a learner.

That's also a pretty important job for an instructor or trainer with their human students, also. It's hard to learn when we don't feel safe trying.
