Dear West High Students, Families, and Staff,

It is with profound sadness that we share with our West High community about the passing of Kent Martin. Kent was a longtime freshman biology teacher at West High School. While Kent made an incredible impact as a teacher, it was his compassion for others that left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Kent once likened himself to Dr. Doolittle because of his love for animals. His classroom was an eclectic community filled with creatures from all over the world. His passion for animals was contagious and students gravitated to Mr. Martin’s classroom. It was one of the reasons so many students considered Kent one of their favorite teachers. His open-door policy was a warm welcome for students and colleagues who needed an empathic ear or helpful advice.

Outside of the classroom, Kent was just as committed to creating a community with those he advised and coached including students on the tennis team, Gay Straight Alliance, and student council. He was also active in the Siouxland community.

When Kent was diagnosed with cancer, he faced it head on with the same positivity as he did everything else.

Our thoughts are with Mr. Martin's family, friends, students, and colleagues. He was an incredible member of our West High family, and he will be missed tremendously.

As we return to school tomorrow, our school counselors will be available to support our students and staff.
