Today is National Medal of Honor Day.

CM3 Marvin Glenn Shields is the only U.S. Navy Seabee to be awarded the Medal of Honor, as well as the first Sailor to receive it during the Vietnam War.

Marvin Shields joined the Navy in 1962, and arrived in Vietnam on February 1, 1965. On the night of June 9, 1965, his team was attacked. Though wounded by mortar fire and shrapnel, and shot in the jaw, Shields helped carry the wounded to safety. Hours later, he volunteered to attempt to knock out a machine gun emplacement. Shields was mortally wounded during the attempt.

He was buried at Gardiner Cemetery in Washington. His name is listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and USS Marvin Shields was named in his honor.

Today, we remember and honor his sacrifice.
