As Madam C.J. Walker once stated, “Don't sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.” As a Black Muslim Woman I strive to stand in the gap and break through barriers, while paving the way for generations of female leaders to follow.

It is with my sincerest gratitude I accept being named an official honoree of the class of 2024 with the Delaware Business Times. Words cannot begin to express how uplifting it feels to receive such a prestigious acknowledgement. This affirms the work that has already been done and inspires the work to come. I will hold on to this award as a reminder for when the journey gets tough to keep moving forward.

Congratulations to all of the honorees in the Class of 2024. I am humbled and honored to share in this rewarding moment with all of you. Let’s continue to shatter glass ceilings!

After taking some time to decompress after an eventful week last week, I had the time to reflect on the privilege I’ve been afforded to have meaningful conversations about women’s mental health. It was such an honor for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.- Alpha Alpha Tau Omega Chapter to extend the invitation for me to sit as a panelist on their Legislative Women’s Forum as an expert Mental Health professional advocating for women’s mental health on a micro and macro level. This event was eye-opening and inspiring to see women come together in community feeling SAFE to be transparent about what steps need to be taken to improve the mental wellness of women in the state of Delaware as well as across our nation. The level of transparency in the room transcended the conversation to levels not planned for, but the necessary direction for effective solutions. I’m just in awe, and looking forward to continual conversations to move the needle a little further in this ongoing movement to end the stigma and close the gaps to in mental health disparities impacting women.

With my deepest gratitude I would like to thank the distinguished ladies of AATO for championing this conversation, and hosting a safe space for this meaningful work. Let’s continue the race TOGETHER!

It was such an honor to participate in the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce Inaugural Minority Health Summit in partnership with the U.S.Departmentofhealth&humanservices. Being a part of the planning committee and mental health panel was nothing short of a fulfilling experience. I am so grateful to Ayanna Khan and the DEBCC for allowing me to share my passion with the amazing health professionals, public figures, entrepreneurs and community members in attendance. My hope is that we continue to have the necessary conversations initiated in this space, and carry out the calls to action to promote change and shift the paradigm of wellness in minority communities. So many meaningful connections were fostered, and I’m looking forward to growing those connections as we continue to do the work that makes Delaware .- Photograpy by John B. 📊 Let's Talk Numbers 📊

Did you know that mental health issues affect us ladies in unique ways? It's time to shed light on some eye-opening statistics:

🌷 Girls and women are more prone to certain mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression. Studies show that nearly 19% of women have experienced symptoms of anxiety compared to 11.9% of men.
🌷 Among adolescent girls, rates of self-harm and suicidal ideation have been rising steadily over the years. In fact, 57% of girls aged 13-18 have reported experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.
🌷 Perinatal depression is another significant concern. As many as 1 in 7 women may experience perinatal depression, impacting their mental well-being during the perinatal period (conception through the first year after giving birth).
🌷 Women also face unique stressors, including societal pressures, caregiving responsibilities, and hormonal fluctuations that can impact mental health.

It's evident that mental health challenges aren't one-size-fits-all. As girls and women, understanding these statistics helps us recognize the importance of proactive self-care and support networks.

Let's use these numbers as a call to action! Let's amplify awareness, support one another, and break down barriers to ensure every girl and woman feels empowered to prioritize their mental well-being. 💪
Remember, seeking help isn't a sign of weakness; it's a brave step toward a healthier, happier you. 💖

🌷Importance of Mental Health for Girls & Women🌷

Hey Ladies! Let's dive into a crucial topic close to our hearts: mental health for girls and women.
Here's the deal: taking care of our mental well-being is just as vital as our physical health. For us ladies, it's about embracing our unique challenges and triumphs while nurturing our minds.

🌷 Why does it matter?
Because mental health shapes every aspect of our lives — from how we tackle daily tasks to how we build relationships. When we prioritize our mental well-being, we're stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to handle life's curveballs.
🌷 Breaking the stigma!
Let's crush the outdated stigma surrounding mental health. Seeking support isn't a sign of weakness; it's a testament to our strength and courage to take charge of our happiness.
🌷 Supporting one another.
We're in this together! By fostering an open, supportive community, we create a safe space to share, listen, and lift each other up through the highs and lows.

Remember, you're not alone. Whether it's a bad day or a tough phase, there's always someone here to support you. 🗣️ Stand firm on your boundaries. That’s the only way people will respect and honor them. Here’s a few tips to get you started.

🌺 Be assertive. Be clear in your communication of your expectations and make it nonnegotiable.

🌺 Just say “NO”. You don’t have to apologize for you for your “No’s”. Just because your capable and able doesn’t mean you’re obligated to do it.

🌺 Be clear on your values. Prioritize and commit to them. Those who desire to be in relationship with you will align with them and honor them.

In this season of self reflection, show yourself some grace by giving yourself permission to celebrate your strides towards your personal growth and development. Just starting the process is a win in itself even if you have yet to cross the finish line. Life challenges will give us many reasons to be self critical. I challenge you to be self affirming and experience JOY for all you are in this current moment while you strive for all you aspire to be in the future.

I did something EXTRAORDINARY tonight. I completed the Mary Ann Shadd Cary and Senator Margaret Rose Henry Civic Engagement Program with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Delaware. To have journeyed through this process with a group of dynamic black women was more than an honor. I would like to congratulate and empower my fellow sisters in civic engagement as they set sail to elicit change in our communities on a micro and macro level. This is just the beginning. Our passions have propelled us forward to bridge the gap and the pave the way for our communities. This is our BECOMING… We have become the silent agitators!!!!

The entire concept of the soft girl era is to allow oneself to be vulnerable. To be able to walk through life with a sense of peace even in the presents of the unknown. In order to accomplish this one must relinquish the need to control everything and everyone in their world. One has to feel safe in order to function in this capacity. Trauma prevents us from doing just that. Trauma heightens our need to control our world to prevent future traumatic events from occurring in our lives. Trauma intensifies our fight or flight responses and protective factors which is in direct conflict with the concept of the soft girl era. Don’t get me wrong… The soft girl eta is attainable, but there’s a level of inner work that needs to be done in order to get there.

So heal the hurt so that you can live the soft life!!!!

When someone violates the rules of the relationship, don’t stand down to save face. This is an indicator that they are either unaware of their unconscious behaviors or they blatantly don’t respect your boundaries. Either way they are still in violation. Being conflict avoidant only leads to future offenses.

If you’re struggling to find the words to address these boundary violations, start with these simple phrases:

🌷 I don’t like it when you
🌷 I don’t feel comfortable when
🌷 I would rather
🌷 That makes me feel
🌷 I’m not willing to

You deserve to have your physical, emotional, mental, intellectual, sexual, material, and time related needs respected. When someone crosses the line or violates your boundaries, it disrupts the relationship and compromises your personal safety. So next time someone attempts to cross the line, stand up, speak up and stay firm on what you need and value.
